Book excerpt: As every sportsperson knows, the dream can't go on forever. After years of dedication, sacrifice and single-minded obsession to get to the top, one day it all has to end. When the World Stops Watching tells the real inside stories of what happened next for sixteen Irish sports stars, as they faced the brand-new challenges of normal life. From the highs of Grand Slam rugby, World Cup football, the Olympic Games, European Tour golf and GAA stardom, these born competitors recount the seismic aftershocks of retirement and the effect it had on them, both physically and mentally. The lives of sporting icons can change overnight. This is a searingly honest and compelling account of what life is really like after the game. Featuring Marcus Horan, Tommy Bowe, Paul Carberry, Niall Quinn, Sonia O'Sullivan, Paul McGee and more. 'One of the most honest and raw books about sport you are likely to read this year or any other' - Malachy Clerkin, Irish Times 'Citing an excerpt from Damien Lawlor's uniquely insightful book When the World Stops Watching, Ronan O'Gara also openly recognised some of the instinctively mixed feelings that come with being torn away from the sport that was once such a central part of his existence - and in that way O'Grady's no different.' - Ian O'Riordan, Irish Times 'Champagne Football rightly getting the plaudits as the stand-out sports book on the shelves, but this by @LawlorDamian is absolutely terrific too.' - Vincent hogan Irish Independent 'A terrific concept expertly executed' - Enda McEvoy, Sunday Times 'A captivating insight into the struggles faced when Irish sports stars retire' - Eddie O'Sullivan

Book excerpt: A seventh-generation Californian, Scott Tinley led the quintessential Golden State dream. As he grew from beach rat to lifeguard to a recreational administration major, it seemed only natural to him that he would try to parlay the athletic skills gleaned from this idyllic lifestyle into a profession as one of the best triathletes in the world. For twenty years, his skill, tenacity, and devil-may-care attitude guided him along the path. But when age took hold of his legs, and no amount of training would help, his athletic gold rush went bust. Cracks in his psyche began to show, as if beneath it all--like much of California itself--his athletic life had been built on a fault. Always introspective and inquiring, Tinley threw himself headlong into athlete retirement and the larger issues of life transition and change. His new journey, driven by his quest for personal growth and healing, was filled with pain, false starts, and heartrending intimacies. It led him to hundreds of other retired professional athletes who would openly discuss their own triumphs and tragedies. With much discipline, Tinley completed one of the most thorough athlete research projects ever attempted, and befriended such superstars as Bill Walton, Eric Heiden, Greg LeMond, Jerry Sherk, Steve Scott, and Rick Sutcliffe. Along the way he uncovered secrets about himself and the process of change, turmoil, and final acceptance, all shared openly and eloquently in Racing the Sunset. This book will do for athletes of every level what Passages did for an entire generation.

Book Athlete Transitions into Retirement

Download or read book Athlete Transitions into Retirement written by Deborah Agnew and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-08-12 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transitions in sport can be either normative (relatively predictable) or non-normative (less predictable) and are critical times in the development of athlete’s careers. Whilst retirement from sport is inevitable, the timing of retirement can be less predictable. If an athlete copes well with the transition they may be better able to adjust to life after sport. However, not coping with the transition can lead to a crisis and negative consequences for the athlete. Transition periods from sport and in particular retirement from sport have been identified as high-risk periods for athletes in terms of psychological distress. However, circumstances surrounding the athlete’s retirement are a critical factor in the transition into life after sport. Voluntarily retiring from sport for example, leads to a smoother transition than being forced into retirement through injury or deselection. Research indicates that retirement from sport should be seen as a process rather than a single moment, with many athletes taking up to 2 years to successfully transition out of sport. Currently, there are few bodies of work that are solely devoted to retirement transition. Athlete Transitions into Retirement: Experiences in Elite Sport and Options for Effective Support provides contemporary viewpoints on athlete transitions from elite sport in a global context. This volume is a collaboration of research from leading authors around the world, offering global perspectives to athlete transitions into retirement and is key reading for both researchers and practitioners in the fields of Sport Psychology and Coaching as well as the Athletes themselves.

Life after sports can be a dark and confusing place as we attempt to figure out who we are without sports. What are you supposed to do with your life when your athletic career comes to an end? For years the majority of your self-confidence came from the fact that you were physically gifted and had the ability to compete among the elite. At some point athletes must realize that they are good for more than just making three-point shots, scoring goals, hitting home runs, and catching touchdown passes. The Sweet Spot: Finding Purpose In Life After Sports will help current student-athletes, former athletes, coaches, and even administrators make the transition to life after sports a little smoother. In this book, athletes will learn how to redefine themselves and how to take the lessons they learned from sports and apply them to their careers. They will also encounter the stories of many former athletes who have been in their shoes and successfully made the transition. Many student-athletes never pause to consider what life will be like once their playing career comes to an end. The truth is there will come a time when life no longer revolves around game day, practice, film sessions, team meetings, and long bus rides. Once you can no longer compete at a high level, will you be ready to attack your career and thrive as you chase your new dream or will you be like a deer caught in headlights? The choice is up to you. Are you ready to discover The Sweet Spot in your life?
