Book Regional Impacts of Resource Developments

Download or read book Regional Impacts of Resource Developments written by C. C. Kissling and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-08-23 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1984. Australia is a resource-rich country deriving a significant proportion of its export earnings from trade in these resources. At the same time, the country is young, sparsely populated beyond the coastal fringe, particularly in the resource-rich areas, and environmentally fragile. The consequences of resource exploitation in these areas have far-reaching policy implications. A range of these concerns is canvassed in this volume, encompassing the views of policy-makers, planners and academics. Five chapters address social and economic impacts ranging over manufacturing and tertiary industry, immigration and labour markets, employment and population and the provision of educational facilities. Many of these are seen in microcosm in the Hunter Valley, New South Wales. Two contributions offer an international perspective, one in another federal system – Canada – and one where Australian interests are participating in resource extraction – Papua New Guinea. The issues raised are fundamental to Australia's development in the 1980's and of importance to everyone connected with the development and planning of Australia's future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What Is Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) is a process that makes use of the temperature difference that exists in the ocean between the deeper, cooler waters and the warmer, shallower or surface waters in order to power a heat engine that generates useful work, most commonly in the form of electricity. OTEC is able to function with a capacity factor that is very high, and as a result, it is able to function in base load mode. How You Will Benefit (I) Insights, and validations about the following topics: Chapter 1: Ocean thermal energy conversion Chapter 2: Heat engine Chapter 3: Power station Chapter 4: Combined cycle power plant Chapter 5: Rankine cycle Chapter 6: Cogeneration Chapter 7: Chiller Chapter 8: Deep ocean water Chapter 9: Thermal power station Chapter 10: Solar desalination Chapter 11: Surface condenser Chapter 12: Binary cycle Chapter 13: Steam-electric power station Chapter 14: Osmotic power Chapter 15: Transcritical cycle Chapter 16: Deep water source cooling Chapter 17: Mist lift Chapter 18: Evaporator (marine) Chapter 19: Low-temperature thermal desalination Chapter 20: Copper in heat exchangers Chapter 21: Low-temperature distillation (II) Answering the public top questions about ocean thermal energy conversion. Book Changing Large Technical Systems

Download or read book Changing Large Technical Systems written by Jane Summerton and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-12-13 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This international anthology presents case studies of historical and contemporary transformations of large technical systems such as railways, telecommunications, electricity, and automobiles. The authors, working at the forefront of historical and social science research on the dynamics of large technical systems, analyze how and why these systems undergo change. Because of their important roles in contemporary society, large technical systems such as railways, airlines, road systems, telecommunications, and electric power network share drawing considerable academic and political interest. In this collaborative study on processes of change in large technical systems, the contributing authors present historical and current case studies of transformation within these systems. Working at the forefront of historical and social science research on the dynamics of large technical systems, the authors specifically analyze how and why the systems undergo change. In some cases, new technologies are solving old problems and presenting opportunities for system growth. In other areas, new regulatory approaches have brought competition and deregulation, often posing challenges to system builders. The authors also show how the breakup of national boundaries and new corporate strategies for global management of technology are transforming systems in ways that will have significant impacts on all consumers

Book Australia Through the Eyes of an Eighty Five Year Old Man

Download or read book Australia Through the Eyes of an Eighty Five Year Old Man written by Trevor Wrightson and published by Balboa Press. This book was released on 2021-12-02 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James Cook’s discovery of Australia changed the course of history. In this book, the author highlights the explorer’s early life and the early settlement of the country. He also reveals how the land became a rich country with people who enjoy a high standard of living. Find out how Australians formed a government and how the cattle industry and natural resources such as coal, iron ore, uranium, aluminum, oxide, lithium, and gold have helped them advance. You’ll also learn about the toll the Great Depression had on Australia, leading to a thirty percent unemployment rate. When World War II commenced in 1939, thousands of young men and women joined the army so they could have a job, thinking it would be all over in a couple of months. The book also highlights more recent challenges, such as the refugee crisis and the coronavirus pandemic, which swept through Australia when passengers on a tourist ship were allowed to disembark.

Book Structural Optimization and Experimental Investigation of the Organic Rankine Cycle for Solar Thermal Power Generation

Download or read book Structural Optimization and Experimental Investigation of the Organic Rankine Cycle for Solar Thermal Power Generation written by Jing Li and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-12-09 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Compared to the conventional Rankine cycle using water, the ORC can create efficient expansion at low power, avoid superheater and offer higher thermal efficiency in low temperature application. Small-scale ORCs from several kWe to a few hundred kWe offer great potential for meeting the residential demand on heat and power, and are of growing interest in scientific and technical fields. However, one critical problem is the decreased device efficiency and cost-effectiveness that arises when the ORC is scaled down. In this thesis, the ORC is combined with low concentration-ratio solar collectors. The background, research trend, merits and importance of the solar ORC are described. To reduce the thermodynamic irreversibility and the cost of the system, three innovative solutions are proposed: solar ORC without heat transfer fluid (HTF), which employs two-stage collectors and heat storage units; hybrid solar power generation based on ORC and amorphous silicon cells; osmosis-driven solar ORC. Heat collection, storage and power conversion are optimized. The design, construction and test of a prototype are conducted, demonstrating the feasibility of the ORC for small-scale cogeneration. Special attention is paid to the variable operation and parameter design with respect to the condensation temperature.

Book Current Environmental Issues and Challenges

Download or read book Current Environmental Issues and Challenges written by Giacomo Cao and published by Springer Science & Business. This book was released on 2014-04-29 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few books currently exist that cover such a wide spectrum of topics. The chapters dealing with air pollution from mobile sources, air pollution and health effects and air quality modelling fall into the air pollution category while the ones related to microalgae for carbon dioxide sequestration/biofuels production, fuel cells, and solar energy technology, respectively, can be ascribed to the energy topic. Several technologies to handle a wide spectrum of environmental pollutants are taken into account in numerous chapters. The chapter on biodiversity is clearly related to the conservation issue, while the water pollution subject is tackled by the chapter on water quality monitoring. Finally, a general analysis on green business, as well as a chapter on grid/cloud computing technology for collaborative problem solving and shared resources management conclude the work. Because of its breadth of coverage, this book is particularly useful as a graduate text.
