Download or read book Lice and Their Menace to Man Classic Reprint written by LL. Lloyd and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lice and Their Menace to Man This book is intended for the general reader rather than for the specialist, and its chief purpose is to introduce the main facts concerning the lice of man which have been brought to light in the last few years. It is somewhat amazing that, though the louse lives in a closer association with man than any other insect does, it should still be the subject of so much erroneous information. Even those who should have been best informed knew little of its detailed habits, when the hardships of war made it so necessary that means should be devised for combating it. To-day we are in a much better position to deal with it than we were four years ago, and this is owing to the closer attention which scientists have bestowed upon it, often at great personal discomfort. In this country its habits have been especially studied by Professor G. H. F. Nuttall, of Cambridge, and Mr. A. Bacot, of the Lister Institute of Preventive Medicine, while in France Captain A. D. Peacock, R. A. M. C., gave us much exact information of its mode of spread among troops in the field. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2017 Wainwright Golden Beer Book Prize for nature writing The natural history of the Western Front during the First World War 'If it weren't for the birds, what a hell it would be.' During the Great War, soldiers lived inside the ground, closer to nature than many humans had lived for centuries. Animals provided comfort and interest to fill the blank hours in the trenches - bird-watching, for instance, was probably the single most popular hobby among officers. Soldiers went fishing in flooded shell holes, shot hares in no-man's land for the pot, and planted gardens in their trenches and billets. Nature was also sometimes a curse - rats, spiders and lice abounded, and disease could be biblical. But above all, nature healed, and, despite the bullets and blood, it inspired men to endure. Where Poppies Blow is the unique story of how nature gave the British soldiers of the Great War a reason to fight, and the will to go on.

Book Doctors in the Great War

Download or read book Doctors in the Great War written by Ian R Whitehead and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2013-11-14 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Doctors played a bigger role in the First World War than in any other previous conflict. This reflected not only the War's unprecedented scale but a growing recognition of the need for proper medical cover. The RAMC had to be expanded to meet the needs of Britain's citizen army. As a result by 1918 some 13,000 doctors were on active service _ over half the nation's doctors.??Strangely, historians have largely neglected the work of doctors during the War. Doctors in the Great War brings to light the thoughts and motivations of doctors who served in 1914-1918, by drawing on a wealth of personal experience documentation, as well as official military sources and the medical press. The author examines the impact of the War upon the medical profession and the Army. He looks at the contribution of medical students, and the extent to which new professional opportunities became available to women doctors.??An insight into the breadth of responsibilities undertaken by Medical Officers is given through analysis of the work of various medical units on the Western Front, demonstrating the important role played by doctors in the maintenance of the Army's physical and mental well-being. The differences between civilian and military medicine are discussed with a consideration of the arrangements for the training of doctors, and an assessment of the difficulties faced by doctors in adapting to military priorities and dealing with new challenges such as gas poisoning, infected wounds and shell shock.??Doctors in the Great War will undoubtedly appeal to general readers, students and specialists in the history of war and society, as well as to those with an interest in the medical profession.??As featured in the Derby Telegraph, Dover Express and Kent & Sussex Courier
