Book Computer Applications to Library

Download or read book Computer Applications to Library written by Kole Lambert and published by Scientific e-Resources. This book was released on with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A library computer system is the software used to catalog, track circulation (where appropriate), and inventory a library's assets. It is intended for home, church, private enterprise, and other small- to medium-sized collections. Larger libraries typically use an integrated library system to manage the more-complex activities, such as acquisitions, interlibrary loan, and licensing online resources. With distributed software the customer can choose to self-install or to have the system installed by the vendor on their own hardware. The customer can be responsible for the operation and maintenance of the application and the data, or the customer can choose to be supported by the vendor with an annual maintenance contract. Some vendors charge for upgrades to the software. Customers, who subscribe to a web (hosted) service, upload data to the vendors remote server through the Internet and may pay a periodic fee to access their data. Modern libraries are constituted within and by a tradition of techniques and practices that represent a hundred years of codified professional knowledge. This book provides a historical overview of this tradition that created a complex environment of expectation and misunderstanding for introducing library automation. This book attempts to delineate and discuss the applications of the computer that have been behind the technological revolution of library science. The aim of the book is to mainly enhance the readers' understanding of the ways in which computers have heralded the invasion of technology into library science, with special attention to the emergence of digital libraries which promise to make libraries and their information completely at the mercy of our fingertips.

Book Circulation Policy in Academic Public and School Libraries

Download or read book Circulation Policy in Academic Public and School Libraries written by Sheila S. Intner and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1987-03-23 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intner conducted a survey of academic, public, and school libraries in order to study circulation policies and practices prevalent in the U.S. From the data she gathered, it is evident that much in the circulation process is not patron oriented and that there are still institutions that make access to information difficult. She intimates that if library patrons were aware of the power they have, they could effect drastic changes in circulation practices. The book is of interest to all who use libraries, but it is particularly pertinent reading for administrators. Booklist This informative study is based on the responses of a sampling of academic, public, and school libraries to a survey conducted in 1983. The selection was made with a deliberate effort to include libraries of varying size, focus, and geographic area around the country, and three vitally important policy issues were emphasized: Who may borrow materials from the library? What may they borrow? How are materials borrowed and what process is followed when they are returned? The answers provided by the sample group to these and other questions are described and analyzed, and comparisons are made of the ways in each library formulates, reviews and amends its policies, and which plans are being made for the future.

Book Libraries and Society

Download or read book Libraries and Society written by Wendy Evans and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2011-04-30 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reviews both the historical and future roles that public, private, academic and special libraries have in supporting and shaping society at local, regional, national and international levels. Globalisation, economic turmoil, political and ethnic tensions, rapid technology development, global warming and other key environmental factors are all combining in myriad and complex ways to affect everyone, both individually and collectively. Fundamental questions are being asked about the future of society and the bedrock organisations that underpin it. Libraries and Society considers the key aspects of library provision and the major challenges that libraries – however defined, managed, developed and provided – now face, and will continue to face in the future. It also focuses on the emerging chapter in cultural, economic and social history and the library's role in serving diverse communities within this new era. - Looks at all types of library in a period of major and discontinuous change, tackling the fundamental questions of the future of libraries in the context of major societal, political and environmental issues - Poses important questions for the profession and policy development - Fills a major gap in literature (recent discourse and debate on the future of democracy, for example, the library is rarely included)

Book Textbooks in Academic Libraries

Download or read book Textbooks in Academic Libraries written by Chris Diaz and published by American Library Association. This book was released on 2018-12-03 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shortly after the syllabi are posted, and long before the beginning of the term, interlibrary loan departments at academic libraries will have filled or rejected innumerable textbook requests. While it would be unwise if not impossible to buy and circulate every textbook at a college or university, there are many academic libraries who are selectively adding textbooks to their collections. And the practice seems to be gaining momentum. In this volume, the Association for Library Collections and Technical Services (ALCTS) and editor Chris Diaz gather case studies that pull together creative approaches and best practices for print textbook reserve programs. This book discusses such topics as results and analysis from a detailed survey of a state university’s core-course textbook reserve program; funding sources for starting or piloting a program;using aggregated enrollment, grade, and textbook cost data to identify "high impact" courses;identifying course-related books that are in the library’s collection or fit an existing collection policy;workflow for using bookstore data with ILS and purchasing systems; andusing LibGuides and Google Sheets to publicize textbook holdings, and how a back-end database supports discovery for students and reporting for reserves staff. A textbook reserve program can be one way of helping students who are struggling with the high cost of textbooks, and this book spotlights a variety of examples that can be used as models.
