Book With Liberty and Justice for Some

Download or read book With Liberty and Justice for Some written by Glenn Greenwald and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2011-11-11 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From "the most important voice to have entered the political discourse in years" (Bill Moyers), a scathing critique of the two-tiered system of justice that has emerged in America From the nation's beginnings, the law was to be the great equalizer in American life, the guarantor of a common set of rules for all. But over the past four decades, the principle of equality before the law has been effectively abolished. Instead, a two-tiered system of justice ensures that the country's political and financial class is virtually immune from prosecution, licensed to act without restraint, while the politically powerless are imprisoned with greater ease and in greater numbers than in any other country in the world. Starting with Watergate, continuing on through the Iran-Contra scandal, and culminating with Obama's shielding of Bush-era officials from prosecution, Glenn Greenwald lays bare the mechanisms that have come to shield the elite from accountability. He shows how the media, both political parties, and the courts have abetted a process that has produced torture, war crimes, domestic spying, and financial fraud. Cogent, sharp, and urgent, this is a no-holds-barred indictment of a profoundly un-American system that sanctions immunity at the top and mercilessness for everyone else.

Book The Structure of Liberty Justice and the Rule of Law

Download or read book The Structure of Liberty Justice and the Rule of Law written by Randy E. Barnett and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1998-04-02 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this provocative and engaging new book, Randy Barnett outlines a powerful and original theory of liberty structured by the liberal conception of justice and the rule of law. Drawing on insights from philosophy, political theory, economics, and law, he shows how this new conception of liberty can confront, and solve, the central societal problems of knowledge, interest, and power. - ;What is liberty, as opposed to license, and why is it so important? When people pursue happiness, peace, and prosperity whilst living in society, they confront pervasive problems of knowledge, interest, and power. These problems are dealt with by ensuring the liberty of the people to pursue their own ends, but addressing these problems also requires that liberty be structured by certain rights and procedures associated with the classical liberal conception of justice and the rule of law. In this controversial new work, Barnett examines the serious social problems that are addressed by liberty and the background or `natural' rights and `rule of law' procedures that distinguish liberty from license. He goes on to outline the constitutional framework that is needed to protect this structure of liberty. This is the only discussion of the liberal conception of justice and the rule of law to draw upon insights from philosophy, economics, political theory, and law to describe comprehensively the vital social functions performed by adherence to these concepts. And, although the book is intended to challenge specialists, its clear and accessible prose ensure that it will be of immense value to both scholars and students working in a range of academic disciplines. -

Book With Liberty and Justice for All

Download or read book With Liberty and Justice for All written by Akelo Luo and published by Dorrance Publishing. This book was released on 2024-06-07 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With Liberty and Justice for All considers the ongoing relevance of addressing America’s historical past in the context of modern technology, communication, and social discourse. Following a fictional string of events, this book reflects the broader societal dialogue on how to confront historical injustices and work toward a more equitable and just future. What we are witnessing in real-time today is affecting us in a way that is detrimental to our survival. Taking sides is not the way out, but facing our demons and dealing with them at all costs is. The problem with America isn’t race; it’s greed disguised as race. President Lyndon B. Johnson once said, “If you can convince the lowest white man he's better than the best colored man, he won't notice you're picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he'll empty his pockets for you.” About the Author Akelo Luo loves community involvement and helping others add value to one’s own life! She teaches her children and grandchildren that helping others keeps you humble; it's only by the grace of God that you have what you have. Family is everything to Akelo but being honest with her children is more valuable than what she can give them. She wants to write this book to leave a legacy for them. Akelo volunteers at the church food bank, homeless shelters, and community events where the homeless are the targeted audience. She is a member of the Lion's Club, and volunteers with Embrace Life and Embrace Grace and Youth For Christ/Juvenile Justice Ministry. Akelo was a paraeducator for about four years, until January 2023. She worked with veterans as a Veteran Service Officer, she retired from the Army as an HRM, Sergeant First Class (2012), and she worked with a non-profit as a case worker and manager for three years with an emphasis on homeless veterans, employment, and housing. Akelo has two beautiful daughters; one is an accounting manager for the school district and the other is a soldier for the US Army.

Book We See It All

Download or read book We See It All written by Jon Fasman and published by Hachette UK. This book was released on 2021-01-26 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This investigation into the legal, political, and moral issues surrounding how the police and justice system use surveillance technology asks the question: what are citizens of a free country willing to tolerate in the name of public safety? As we rethink the scope of police power, Jon Fasman’s chilling examination of how the police and the justice system use the unparalleled power of surveillance technology—how it affects privacy, liberty, and civil rights—becomes more urgent by the day. Embedding himself within police departments on both coasts, Fasman explores the moral, legal, and political questions posed by these techniques and tools. By zeroing in on how facial recognition, automatic license-plate readers, drones, predictive algorithms, and encryption affect us personally, Fasman vividly illustrates what is at stake and explains how to think through issues of privacy rights, civil liberties, and public safety. How do these technologies impact how police operate in our society? How should archaic privacy laws written for an obsolete era—that of the landline and postbox—be updated? Fasman looks closely at what can happen when surveillance technologies are combined and put in the hands of governments with scant regard for citizens’ civil liberties, pushing us to ask: Is our democratic culture strong enough to stop us from turning into China, with its architecture of control?

Book excerpt: Citizen/Slave: Understanding Liberty is a treatise that describes with acute accuracy what freedom, liberty, and justice really means, how the American people have been tricked out of their sovereignty by stealthy legal illusions, and how the people can repair America by regaining control of their individual unalienable rights. Citizen/Slave explains the problems in detailhow they evolved, how they became erroneously accepted by the people, what the legal illusions and realities are, and what the American people can do to save their individual sovereignty and country, thereby creating a totally free and prosperous society with safeguards that can never be corrupted again. Sprinkled liberally throughout this book are quotes from numerous well-known personages from history, which remind us of immutable principles that have been forgotten and overlooked in our fast-paced modern world. Citizen/Slave puts together the pieces of the puzzle for understanding the long-forgotten common-sense principles of creating justice and why governments and societies either succeed or fail. Without these organized foundational principles, like a boat without a rudder, societies and governments will waffle in the uncertain tides of confusion and injustice that has been the downfall of every great society. Citizen/Slave is a must-read for all people, young and old, lay people and professionals, students and professors alike. Understanding the principles expounded in Citizen/Slave is as important to the freedoms, liberties, and justice of people as reading, writing, and math is to functioning in the modern world. Citizen/Slave is a simple road map for catapulting society into the next step of human evolution.
