Download or read book The Bellarmine Feint written by Tom Czerwinski and published by First Edition Design Pub.. This book was released on 2014-08-12 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bellarmine Feint is an intellectual thriller reminiscent of the late Michael Crichton’s wrapping an adventure around a scientific core. The underlying theme is that the pursuit of progress and prosperity through constant innovation and novelty is threatened by the limits discovered in the new science of complexity theory. It turns out that moderation is not just an ethical or pragmatic consideration, but a scientific necessity. The Vatican, bent on restoring the importance of tradition and order, devises a plan to use this discovery to both preserve its existence, and to curb the conduct of the modern secular state. In order to test this strategy, Dr. Alan Voldt, an unaware player, is sent to Turkey in 2018 to finalize an inter-university exchange agreement. Voldt is an unlikely candidate to be a lay numerary of the Vatican’s Order of Opus Dei. The former Youngstown State tight end and Marine platoon leader is a controversial authority on the rise and fall of civilizations. Although a committed Catholic, he follows in the footsteps of St. Augustine, who until well into his thirties had prayed, “Grant me chastity and continence, but not yet.” At 41, Voldt has still not turned that corner. Turkey’s controversial entry to the European Union gets tangled up with the Vatican strategy through Voldt’s furtive affair with Sila Gyor, a prominent Turkish TV anchor. Her views on Turkey’s future reflect a yearning for Ottoman past glory. This conflicts with a family tradition loyal to the Ataturk European-oriented vision. The ensuing contention over her son’s allegiance leads to tragic consequences. Inexorably, Turkey’s MiT and America’s CIA are drawn into the plot, because interpretations of the Vatican strategy assume conspiratorial dimensions. In parallel, a Canadian-based Russian oligarch, Maksim Ioshchenkov, also has an interest in Voldt for his access to human terrain analysis--the mapping of tribal, clan, family and clique dynamics underlying formal social structures. This knowledge is essential to his ambition to reopen oil and gas fields in the volatile northern Afghan province of Jozwan. The matter disturbs Voldt. Having been wounded in Afghanistan, the prospect of returning threatens to release his repressed PTSD nightmares. Despite his best efforts he is unable to avoid facing his demons. Download or read book The Promised Piece written by Marilyn Emery and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2017-07-11 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Promised Piece is the inspirational journey of two girls, Ford (Carol Ford Jennings) and Lucky (Marilyn Lutke Emery) who have remained lifetime friends. From elementary school to present park bench conversations as active retirees, you will travel with and experience Carol and Marilyns forever friendship journey. Ford and Lucky share their conversations and events while attending grades K-12 at Godfrey-Lee Public School in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Included are their experiences with the Lee High School (LHS) group of sisters called Draco. The group, known in adulthood as The Ten, continued a longtime friendship through college, careers, marriages, birth of children, and family issues, with a sharing and caring attitude. The LHS classmates who graduated with Carol and Marilyn in 1960 also became forever friends. You will read about the five-year class reunions and other dinners held over the years. God led the way for Carol, Marilyn, and their friends as they were planted, nourished, grew, and bloomed through healthy lifestyles, joys, and sorrows, to become one large family. Youll realize the fun they experienced and how a lifetime relationship became such a precious gift. Marilyn documented Carols and her past experiences and read the manuscript aloud until Carol was physically able to contribute to the storyline. Carol shared her ideas with additional details about her life, health issues, and survival. The Ten and also a few male classmates submitted pieces for The Promised Piece as well. Upon conclusion of the friendship story, Carol compared the process to that of birthing a baby. The usual nine months became ten years for the project to fully develop, with additional time for the book to be published. Marilyn felt the writing process from beginning to end was like an artist painting a beautiful canvas of flowers. It took time to get the proper perspective by patiently sketching then painting each petal, adding color, tone, and texture, and finally upon perfection, the artistic piece was framed and enjoyed. The project concluded with thankfulness to God for giving Carol and Marilyn the motivation and determination to finish The Promised Piece, thus fulfilling their promise to each other.

Eutrophication, causes, consequences, and control provides a current account of many important aspects of the processes of natural and accelerated eutrophication in major aquatic ecosystems around the world. The connections between accelerated eutrophication and climate change, chemical contamination of surface waters, and major environmental and ecological impacts on aquatic ecosystems are discussed. Water quality changes typical of eutrophication events in major climate zones including temperate, tropical, subtropical, and arid regions are included along with current approaches to treat and control increased eutrophication around the world. The book provides many useful new insights to address the challenges of global increases in eutrophication and the increasing threats to biodiversity and water quality.

Download or read book Scepticism in the Enlightenment written by R.H. Popkin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Starting with Richard Popkin's essay of 1963, `Scepticism in the Enlightenment', a new investigation into philosophical scepticism of the period was launched. The late Giorgio Tonelli and the late Ezequiel de Olaso examined in great detail the kinds of scepticism developed during the Enlightenment, and the kind of answer to scepticism that was developed by Leibniz. Their original researches and interpretations are of great value and importance. As a result of their work Popkin modified his original claims, as shown in the last two articles in this volume. The book contains an introduction by Popkin and 10 essays, two of which have never been published before. This collection should be of interest to students and scholars of 18th century thought in England, France and Germany.

Download or read book Extraction of Natural Products Using Near Critical Solvents written by M.B. King and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1992-12-31 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to present the current state of the art of extracting natural products with near-critical solvents and to view the possibilities of further extensions of the technique. Relevant background theory is given but does not dominate the book. Carbon dioxide is the near-critical solvent used in most recent applications and inevitably receives prominence. In addition to general descriptions and reviews, the book contains three chapters by indus trial practitioners who describe in detail the operation of their processes and discuss the market for their products. Sections on the design of the pressure vessels and pumps required in these processes and on the acquisition of the data required for design are included. The costing of the processes is also discussed. There is good scope for combining a near-critical extraction step with other process steps in which the properties of near-critical solvents are utilised, for example as a reaction or crystallisation medium and a chapter is devoted to these important aspects. It is hoped that the work will be found to contain a great deal of specific information of use to those already familiar with this field. However the style of presentation and content is such that it will also be useful as an introduction. In particular it will be helpful to those wondering if this form of separation method has anything to offer for them, whether they are engineers, chemists or managers in industry, or in academic or research institutions.
