Book Clothing the Poor in Nineteenth Century England

Download or read book Clothing the Poor in Nineteenth Century England written by Vivienne Richmond and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-09-19 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this pioneering study Vivienne Richmond reveals the importance of dress to the nineteenth-century English poor, who valued clothing not only for its practical utility, but also as a central element in the creation and assertion of collective and individual identities. During this period of rapid industrialisation and urbanisation formal dress codes, corporate and institutional uniforms, and the spread of urban fashions replaced the informal dress of agricultural England. This laid the foundations of modern popular dress and generated fears about the visual blurring of social boundaries as new modes of manufacturing and retailing expanded the wardrobes of the majority. However, a significant impoverished minority remained outside this process. Clothed by diminishing parish assistance, expanding paternalistic charity and the second-hand trade, they formed a 'sartorial underclass' whose material deprivation and visual distinction was a cause of physical discomfort and psychological trauma.

Book Longest Journey

Download or read book Longest Journey written by Joan Anim-Addo and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Longest Journey is essentially a local history, the story of three continents and the journeys which brought them together. The pirates and adventurers, who crossed the oceans in search of gold and slaves, returned to build the manor houses of Kentish London. Surviving the horrors of the 'Middle Passage' were characters like Cornelius the Blackamore, buried at Lee, the activist Equiano who forgot he was a slave until he was resold at Deptford and young Sancho who learned his letters in a duke's library on Blackheath. In the post-war years a new generation of African-Carribbeans made the crossing, coming in hope, facing a new challenge and putting down the roots of a local black community."--Back cover of book

Book Tracing Your Ancestors Through Local History Records

Download or read book Tracing Your Ancestors Through Local History Records written by Jonathan Oates and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2016-02-29 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Family history should reveal more than facts and dates, lists of names and places it should bring ancestors alive in the context of their times and the surroundings they knew and research into local history records is one of the most rewarding ways of gaining this kind of insight into their world. That is why Jonathan Oatess detailed introduction to these records is such a useful tool for anyone who is trying to piece together a portrait of family members from the past. In a series of concise and informative chapters he looks at the origins and importance of local history from the sixteenth century onwards and at the principal archives national and local, those kept by government, councils, boroughs, museums, parishes, schools and clubs. He also explains how books, photographs and other illustrations, newspapers, maps, directories, and a range of other resources can be accessed and interpreted and how they can help to fill a gap in your knowledge. As well as describing how these records were compiled, he highlights their limitations and the possible pitfalls of using them, and he suggests how they can be combined to build up a picture of an individual, a family and the place and time in which they lived.
