Download or read book Patrons Brokers and Clients in Seventeenth Century France written by Sharon Kettering and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1986-06-12 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A bold new study of politics and power in 17th-century France, this book argues that the French Crown centralized its power nationally by changing the way it delegated its royal patronage in the provinces. During this period, the royal government of Paris gradually extended its sphere of control by taking power away from the powerful and potentially disloyal provincial governors and nobility and instead putting it in the hands of provincial power brokers--regional notables who cooperated with the Paris ministers in exchange for their patronage. The new alliances between the Crown's ministers and loyal provincial elites functioned as political machines on behalf of the Crown, leading to smoother regional-national cooperation and foreshadowing the bureaucratic state that was to follow.

Download or read book The Contending Kingdoms written by Glenn Richardson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The kingdoms of France and England were for many centuries military, economic, cultural and colonial rivals. This is particularly true of the early modern period which witnessed the rise of French military hegemony and the expansion of English commerce. Dealing with the period 1420-1700, this collection offers a snapshot of Anglo-French relations across the three centuries from established historians and younger scholars from France, Britain and Luxembourg. Based broadly on 'diplomatic' history, but incorporating wider perspectives from cultural and social or gender history; each essay uncovers the fascinating and complex arrangements that characterize Anglo-French relations in this period. Competition and hostility between the two kingdoms there certainly was, but it took a surprising variety of forms and often proved intellectually productive for one side or the other and sometimes for both. The chapters mix treatments of broad themes and particular circumstances or individuals and each makes specific comparisons with French and English experience across the early-modern period. In so doing they elaborate and go beyond the evidence of Anglo-French hostility to explore evidence of political co-operation and cultural influences, highlighting just how close early modern England's connections with France were, even at times of crisis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "For the presentation of (some of) these (essays), no explanation need be tendered; but others are introduced, the themes of which have become trite, even to persons of no extraordinary erudition. Perhaps, therefore, indulgence should be asked for an apparently reckless augmentation of the mass of polemics already superfluous and tiresome. Nevertheless, such an apology shall not be made. The fact that the indicated errors are constantly being advanced, despite the multifarious refutations which are at the command of the sincere investigator; the fact that these errors too often meet with silence on the part of those whose highest interests demand their exposition;[iv] these strange and saddening considerations justify our action, and preclude any fear of its being ascribed to a 'cacoethes scribendi'. "Some Lies and Errors of History" is a collection of essays on historical persons and events, aimed at debunking some of the lies commonly held as truth, but which author, the Rev. Reuben Parsons, DD, insists would be easily discounted if a critical look of them were made. Some of the events covered include: 'St. Cyril of Alexandria and the Murder of Hypatia', 'The Divorce of Napoleon and Josephine', 'Galileo', 'Louis XI.; The Travestied and the Real', 'The Middle Age Not a Starless Night', and 'The Man With the Iron Mask.'
