Book excerpt: Living with History focuses on a particular aspect of heritage preservation in the twentieth century: destruction and postwar reconstruction in Belgium, France, Germany, Great Britain, and The Netherlands. This book establishes a status quaestionis for the historiography of wartime and postwar preservation, and sets these particular developments in preservation history in the context of the general evolution of architecture and urbanism. The authors investigate the specific role of conservationists and heritage institutions and administrations in the overall reconstruction and examine the part played by architects and planners in heritage preservation.
Download or read book The Lomidine Files written by Guillaume Lachenal and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2017-10-01 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This prize-winning study examines the nightmarish effects of the so-called “wonder drug” in preventing sleeping sickness in Africa. After the Second World War, French colonial health services set out to eradicate sleeping sickness in Africa. The newly discovered drug Lomidine (also known as Pentamidine) promised to protect against infection, and mass campaigns of “preventive lomidinization” were launched across Africa. But the drug proved to be both inefficient and dangerous. In numerous cases, it led to fatality. In The Lomidine Files, Guillaume Lachenal traces the medicine’s trajectory from experimental trials during the Second World War to its abandonment in the late 1950s. He explores colonial doctors’ dangerous obsession with an Africa freed from disease and describes the terrible reactions caused by the drug, the resulting panic of colonial authorities, and the decades-long cover-up that followed. A fascinating material history that touches on the drug’s manufacture and distribution, as well as the tragedies that followed in its path, The Lomidine Files resurrects a nearly forgotten scandal. Ultimately, it illuminates public health not only as a showcase of colonial humanism and a tool of control but also as an arena of mediocrity, powerlessness, and stupidity. Winner of the George Rosen Prize by the American Association for the History of Medicine

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traveling in a First-Class Cabin on the luxury liner France early in 1963, the Western world's most famous painting sailed across the Atlantic on its maiden voyage to the United States. The goodwill generated by the loan eased U.S.-French relations, which had soured over tensions stemming from the cold war. The mastermind behind the Mona Lisa's triumphant tour was France's newly appointed minister of cultural affairs, Andre Malraux. In this book, Herman Lebovics recounts how Malraux's brilliant foray into the realm of diplomacy was but one example of his efforts to employ France's cultural heritage in the service of a renewed national grandeur.

Book excerpt: Interest in early modern women writers is on the rise. However, familiarity with their works varies greatly from one country to another, and resources to assess their historical significance remain insufficient. Yet empirical evidence suggests that women writers who are no longer well-known today played surprisingly varied roles in the literary field of early modern Europe. The papers collected in this volume address early modern female authorship from the late Middle Ages to the end of the eighteenth century, ranging geographically from Portugal to Russia, and from Italy to Denmark. In particular, they focus on three themes: the creation of female spaces or communities; women's appropriation of existing or developing literary genres; and transnational perspectives on early modern women's writings. Contributors include: Vanda Anastácio, Bernadette Andrea, Mónica Bolufer, Philiep Bossier, Hans Bots, Kathleen Garay, Nina Geerdink, Perry Gethner, Elena Gretchanaia, Ineke Janse, Madeleine Jeay, Anne-Marie Mai, Christine Mongenot, Meredith Ray, Ina Schabert, and Lynn Lara Westwater.
