By the mid-twentieth century, advertising and movies had not only made it acceptable for women to smoke but smoking had become a potent symbol of their emancipation. From mass cigarette production in 1888 to the first studies linking cigarettes to lung cancer in 1950, The Freedom to Smoke explores gender and other key issues related to smoking in Montreal, including the arrival of "big tobacco," first attempts to ban the cigarette, wartime tobacco funds, French Canadian smoking habits, rituals of manliness, and the growing respectability of women smokers - none of which have been examined by historians. Jarrett Rudy argues that while people smoked for highly personal reasons, their smoking rituals were embedded in social relations and shaped by dominant norms of taste and etiquette. The Freedom to Smoke examines the role of the tobacco industry, health experts, churches, farmers, newspapers, the military, the state, and smokers themselves. A pioneering city-based study, it weaves Western understandings of respectable smoking through Montreal's diverse social and cultural fabric. Rudy argues that etiquette gave smoking a political role, reflecting and serving to legitimize beliefs about inclusion, exclusion, and hierarchy that were at the core of a transforming liberal order.

The Yamani author was an eyewitness of several of the battles he describes, and is an invaluable source. His book, which is full of human, and at times tragic, drama, makes a major contribution to our knowledge of a crucially important period in the hisoty of Ethiopia and Horn of Africa. 'Futuh al-Habasa, ' or 'Conquest of Abyssinia' - which undoubtedly reflects the situation as it seemed to its Yamani author at the time of its composition. The forces of Imam Ahmad bin Ibrahim had occupied the greater part of Ethiopia. The resistance of Emperor Lebna Dengel had virtually come to an end, and many Christians had chosen to convert to Islam. The victorious Imam's regime seemed there to stay. This was, however, far from the end of the story. The Imam was killed in battle on February 21, 1543, whereupon his army almost immediately disintegrated. Those of his soldiers who could do so made their way back to the East. Not a few Muslim converts reverted to their former faith. The Futuh thus refers to a relatively short, though crucially important, period in Ethiopia's long history. The book is nevertheless valuable, in that its author was an eye-witness of many of the events he describes, and writes, as far as we can judge, with a degree of objectivity rare for his time. Their papacies coincided with the rise of fascism and Nazism, the Holocaust, and the establishment of the State of Israel. Notes that Pius XI not only condemned racial antisemitism in Germany and elsewhere, but was the first Pope to actively take a stand in defense of the Jews. Pius XII, who did not possess the assertive qualities of his predecessor, but was a good diplomat, deplored Nazi and fascist antisemitism, but kept silent on the Holocaust throughout the war years. Nevertheless, during the Holocaust, he rendered help to thousands of Jews in Italy and elsewhere. Stresses the fact that both Popes acted at a time when many Catholic priests and hierarchs in Germany and other countries supported Nazism and racism. Although Pius XII, and the entire Catholic Church, did not approve of the Zionist program to revive the Jewish state in Palestine, he spoke up for the preservation of Jewish holy places in Israel on a par with Christian holy places. John XXIII, the supporter of reconciliation between Christians and Jews, paved the way for Vatican Council II and the document "Nostra aetate".
