Book Debussy

Download or read book Debussy written by Stefan Jarociński and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the first, Debussy's music lent itself to all kinds of convenient critical labels, of which the most fashionable has always been 'impressionist'. In this book the doyen of Polish musicologists examines Debussy's output against the twin backgrounds of his upbringing and of contemporary movements in the other arts besides music. He concludes that the 'impressionist' analogy between music and painting has been too deceptively obvious, and that the movement with which Debussy's art is most deeply impregnated is Symbolism. This he shows by a review of the general aesthetic ferments of this age, by close analysis of Debussy's music, his early works in particular, and by well-directed quotation from Debussy's own many writings on the subject. In the course of his argument he leads the reader down many unexpected bypaths in aesthetics; his book is both an original contribution to musicology and a philosophical meditation on the whole of the art of this unusually fertile and adventurous period.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Japanese geisha, a Middle Eastern caravan, a Hungarian-'Gypsy' fiddler, Carmen flinging a rose at Don José - portrayals of people and places that are considered somehow 'exotic' have been ubiquitous from 1700 to today, whether in opera, Broadway musicals, instrumental music, film scores, or in jazz and popular song. Often these portrayals are highly stereotypical but also powerful, indelible and touching - or troubling. Musical Exoticism surveys the vast and varied repertoire of Western musical works that evoke exotic locales. It relates trends in musical exoticism to other trends in music, such as programme music and avant-garde experimentation, as well as to broader historical developments such as nationalism and empire. Ralph P. Locke outlines major trends in exotic depiction from the Baroque era onward, and illustrates these trends through close study of numerous exotic works, including operas by Handel and Rameau, Mozart's 'Rondo alla turca', 'Madame Butterfly' and 'West Side Story'.

Book excerpt: Les journées de cuivres anciens (Early Brass Days), the Historic Brass Society conference at the Cité de la Musique in Paris, attracted performers, scholars, educators, and students of early brass from various parts of Europe and the United States. Brass Scholarship in Review provides a record of the scholarly side of the conference, including reports on roundtable discussions as well as individual papers from leading authorities on early brass. Articles cover a wide range of interests, from the historical to the technical, from the Renaissance to the twentieth century. There are articles on such diverse topics as early hunting horn signals, trumpeters in Renaissance Parma, early recordings, trumpet acoustics, and the characteristics of metals used in early instrument manufacture. The volume is particularly rich in nineteenth-century topics, including ground-breaking work on Adolph Sax as leader of the banda of the Paris Opéra and recent discoveries relating to the Gautrot firm of instrument makers.

  • Release : 1969
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 312 pages

Download or read book The Harp written by Roslyn Rensch and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Written by an art historian who is also a performing harpist, this book provides, in a single source, information on the development of the harp and its technique and repertoire. The first part is devoted to a lucid exposition of the history of the instrument and is documented by over 70 illustrations of carvings, illuminated manuscripts, paintings, and musical instruments. Dr. Rensch traces the harp from its representation on monuments of the ancient East to its present-day form. There is material from Egypt, Mesopotamia, Israel, and Greece, with a rich haul from medieval manuscripts and carvings of Western Europe. Harps portrayed by master painters, from the early Renaissance to the baroque period, and some extant harps from the late Middle Ages are also described in detail. There is an extensive discussion of the pedal harp, from the earliest instruments made by Hochbrucker, Cousineau, Naderman, and Erard to harps made in America in the twentieth century by Lyon and Healy and by Wurlitzer. Contributions of the virtuoso harpists of the nineteenth century and important harpist-teachers of the twentieth are noted. Modern use of the harp is also surveyed. The book's information on technical points, special effects, and the like will be of particular interest. A full list of recordings of solo and ensemble music and a carefully chosen list of compositions, graded for school use, are included in the appendixes. There are also a comprehensive bibliography and an index. The material of this book will be of wide interest to the professional musician, the music educator, and the composer; students of the harp will find it a vital source of information."--Jacket.
