Book excerpt: From the bestselling masters of the Old West comes the first in a blazing new series about a young deputy sheriff’s coming of age—and trial by gunfire—in a small Texas town. This is the blistering saga of a hero in training, from first blood to final showdown… Flint Moran was fourteen years old when the Civil War ended. How did a teenaged boy track down and capture two hardcase thieves without any help? That’s what Tinhorn sheriff Buck Jackson wants to know. He can’t help but be impressed by Flint’s sharp eye and natural talent with a Henry rifle. So he offers to deputize the boy—tin badge, Colt Frontier Six-Shooter, and all—and Flint happily accepts. But there are things the young deputy doesn’t know. And what he doesn’t know could kill him. . . . There’s a gunman coming to town. A showdown is brewing that could prove to be Flint’s first—and possibly last—test. But either way, there will be blood. . . . Live Free. Read Hard.

Book excerpt: One of the keys to acquiring a new language is to learn the patterns that make up the language. Simply learning phrases so you can speak "pidgin" Cherokee is not learning Cherokee. You need to learn the fundamentals of the language on how words are put together to be able to understand and communicate in the language. There are many degrees of meaning that different word parts provide and if you don't learn these shades of meaning up front and how they are expressed you will never progress beyond simple memorized phrases and never obtain satisfaction with the language. While each person's skill will differ, one should strive to gain enough understanding of the mechanics of language to be able to comprehend and communicate effectively. The goal of this material is to provide you a solid structural foundation on how Cherokee works. You will learn how words are put together in basic sentences and how to form new words for ideas not listed in the dictionary.

Download or read book Let the People See written by Elliott J. Gorn and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-10-01 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world knows the story of young Emmett Till. In August 1955, the fourteen-year-old Chicago boy supposedly flirted with a white woman named Carolyn Bryant, who worked behind the counter of a country store, while visiting family in Mississippi. Three days later, his mangled body was recovered in the Tallahatchie River, weighed down by a cotton-gin fan. Till's killers, Bryant's husband and his half-brother, were eventually acquitted on technicalities by an all-white jury despite overwhelming evidence. It seemed another case of Southern justice. Then details of what had happened to Till became public, which they did in part because Emmett's mother, Mamie Till-Mobley, insisted that his casket remain open during his funeral. The world saw the horror, and Till's story gripped the country and sparked outrage. Black journalists drove down to Mississippi and risked their lives interviewing townsfolk, encouraging witnesses, spiriting those in danger out of the region, and above all keeping the news cycle turning. It continues to turn. In 2005, fifty years after the murder, the FBI reopened the case. New papers and testimony have come to light, and several participants, including Till's mother, have published autobiographies. Using this new evidence and a broadened historical context, Elliott J. Gorn delves more fully than anyone has into how and why the story of Emmett Till still resonates, and always will. Till's murder marked a turning point, Gorn shows, and yet also reveals how old patterns of thought and behavior endure, and why we must look hard at them.
Download or read book Let the World See You written by Sam Acho and published by Thomas Nelson. This book was released on 2020-10-13 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NFL linebacker, speaker, podcaster, and humanitarian Sam Acho gives a blueprint for taking off our masks and living lives of genuine authenticity. Most of us hide. We play small and don't live up to our full potential. Sam Acho was one of those people. As an NFL linebacker, for example, he earned his MBA but told no one because he was afraid of what people might think if they found out that he cared about things that weren't "normal" for his profession. After many years of hiding himself, the person he had become had no connection to the real Sam. Only when he lost a friend and a mentor did he realize he was doing it all wrong--just like many us do, when we try to become someone we're not. All the while, we ignore the unique gifts and talents and personality we truly possess. But there is another way of living: Let the world see you. Your quirks, your passions, and your inner desires were not given to you by accident. And the world needs your gifts. In Let the World See You, Sam Acho shares lessons from his own life as well as stories from others to reveal how you can overcome your fears and discover your true selves. Being the real you pays big. No one else has what you have. No one else can share what you share. Let the World See You helps crack the shell of people who are in hiding and reveals the benefits of a lifestyle lived on purpose.

Book excerpt: If you are young (or young only in heart ) and attempting to discover who you are meant to be, Fr. Mark Mossa can help you find the ways God is already in your life. Mossa provides an honest and entertaining account of how he, as a younger adult, now a Jesuit priest, attempts to find God's will for his life. Mossa's friends tell him that he has a talent for making weird (they politely say different) connections. He responds that images, lyrics, and repeatedly quoted lines from popular culture stick with us because they connect with something deep down inside of us and say something meaningful about our human experience. We need only take some time to reflect on our experience--and that is what Mark Mossa helps us to do--and we'll see that God has already been trying to communicate with us in unexpected and surprising ways. Maybe even weird ways The audio edition of this book can be downloaded via Audible.
