Book War Letters Home from Crimea and India

Download or read book War Letters Home from Crimea and India written by Dorothy Bentley Smith and published by . This book was released on 2024 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Writing this particular book has been an unusual experience from which I can appreciate the passion and emotional oscillations involved when Count Leo Nikolaievich Tolstoy wrote his epic War and Peace (1875-78). Although obviously not present during the events taking place in the Crimea, which Tolstoy was on occasion, yet through letters written by a young lieutenant to his family near Macclesfield, the sights, sounds and feelings expressed have enabled a significant part of the young man's story to be written. The second story of a young doctor from Macclesfield, a contemporary of the lieutenant, who again write in-depth letters home during his service in India and Egypt, is full of interesting detail which initially suggests reminiscences of a tourist's holiday. It lures us into a false sense of security for the horrifying events that were to follow. Whilst war and battles encompass death, gloom and destruction, yet there are the lighter fascinating interludes, so important to balance the story and bring to life the characters of those involved, and also their comrades and friends. I sincerely hope that these stories will encourage an appreciation of the service given by these two young men. who did not hesitate to serve their nation in its time of need. Their resilience in adversity and their dedication to duty was second to none, and, although quite different in character, both were psychologically suited for the war zone in which each served.

Book The Siege of Sevastopol 1854 1855

Download or read book The Siege of Sevastopol 1854 1855 written by Anthony Dawson and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2017-06-30 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A history of the grueling Crimean War battle as told through personal accounts of those who fought there. The Crimean War, the most destructive and deadly war of the nineteenth century, has been the subject of countless books, yet historian Anthony Dawson has amassed an astonishing collection of previously unknown and unpublished material, including numerous letters and private journals. Many untapped French sources reveal aspects of the fighting in the Crimea that have never been portrayed before. The accounts demonstrate the suffering of the troops during the savage winter and the ravages of cholera and dysentery that resulted in the deaths of more than 16,000 British troops and 75,000 French. Whilst there is graphic first-hand testimony from those that fought up the slopes of the Alma, in the valley of death at Balaklava, and the fog of Inkerman, the book focusses upon the siege; the great artillery bombardments, the storming of the Redan and the Mamelon, and the largest man-made hole in history up to that time when the Russians blew up the defences they could not hold, with their own men inside. The Siege of Sevastopol also highlights, for the first time, the fourth major engagement in the Crimea, the Battle of the Tchernaya in August 1855, the Russians’ last great attempt to break the siege. This predominantly French-fought battle has never before examined in such in English language books. Praise for The Siege of Sevastopol, 1854–1855 “In this fascinating book, the voices of men involved in the war in the Crimea are heard for the first time. Compelling and intriguing stuff.” —Books Monthly “The author has collected a large amount of previously unpublished material for this new work. Entries from private letters and journal are mixed with French sources previously unused in the English-speaking world. The result is a work that effectively conveys the thoughts and experiences of the participants to the reader.” —Warfare History Network

Book The Victoria Crosses of the Crimean War

Download or read book The Victoria Crosses of the Crimean War written by James W. Bancroft and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2017-09-30 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Crimean War saw the introduction of the Victoria Cross, which was awarded to 111 men. Whilst the history of the Crimean War has been related many times, never before have the stories of those individuals who were awarded the VC been told. In this, the result of four decades of accumulated research, renowned historian James Bancroft describes who the men were, how they gained the Victoria Cross, and what happened to them afterwards. Great attention has been given to checking the correct spelling of the names of people and locations, burial places and new memorials, and dates of awards and promotions. The author has made every effort to contact museums and other establishments to get up-to-date information on the whereabouts of medals and their accessibility. The men recorded here displayed valor and determination resulting in many deeds of exceptional courage which became a regular occurrence in the illustrious annals of the British Army. Among them are heroes who had the guts to put themselves in mortal danger by picking up live shells that could have exploded and blown them apart at any moment, gallant troopers who took part in a cavalry charge that they knew was doomed before it began and they were about to be cut to pieces, and valiant individuals who had the audacity to sneak into unknown territory to take the conflict into the enemys back yard and risk capture and ill-treatment. This account of the fascinating lives of these heroes is accompanied with forty-five portraits.

Book Women and the British Army 1815 1880

Download or read book Women and the British Army 1815 1880 written by Lynn MacKay and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2023-08-15 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the world of women who married, or dealt with British soldiers below the rank of officer during the nineteenth century, including fiancées, wives, mothers, sisters, and daughters, as well as the prostitutes they consorted with. It examines women's experiences over the time cycle of a soldier's service. It considers women's finances, how they struggled to make ends meet and how they appealed to the government for support, including in widowhood and after a soldier's service had been completed. It discusses how soldiers' women were viewed in the press, in literature and in society more widely, highlighting in particular issues concerning morality and independence, and outlines how the Crimean War and its aftermath brought about extensive army reforms and also a sharp revision of the reputation of soldiers' wives. The book includes an exploration of soldiers' relations with prostitutes and how prostitutes were regulated, and a consideration of the impact on soldiers' wives of physical arrangements such as barracks, and overall provides much insight into the nature of plebeian life in the nineteenth century. The women portrayed often emerge as exceptionally resolute, independent and canny.
