Download or read book Letters to My Mother written by Mary Ruth Borg and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2009 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I knew I liked to write when I was a teenager, locking myself in my room. I was angry, frustrated and needed a positive outlet. I was tired of breaking things. I was sad having to pick up pieces of my little treasures. So I picked up a pencil to write about how I felt and why I was being self-destructive. I was determined to find a way to diffuse the confusion in my head. Taught very early to pray, I'd put my prayers on paper. Seeing something written brought me back into reality. I had a reference point. Something I could read over and over to remind myself who I was and that I would be okay. This is my story of survival. My journey from the traumatic experience of being molested countless times by my step-father while living within the strict religious practices of Jehovah's Witnesses to my healing process with Parents United. I thought my life of confusion, mistrust and low self-esteem could never change. As I got older, I attracted more dysfunction in my choices. I didn't know I could change that. I didn't know any better. I became afraid for my children. I thought I was crazy and didn't have good parenting skills. After years of therapy, I learned to have control over my life and how to take the power back that I kept giving away. I am no longer a victim. It has been a long and twisty road. Today, I am proud to be happy, healthy and productive in my world. I am proud to be a survivor! I hope to inspire others and give them hope that the craziness in their heads can go away. I want to keep talking about this until the cycle is broken and all children are safe.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born out of wedlock to a rebellious teenaged mother, Bella Rose became known as he homeliest child the people of Homewood, Montana, had ever seen. Born with odd facial features and a club foot, she would later be stricken with poliomyelitis, resulting in further disability. Unsuccessful attempts to correct her severe spinal curvature defect resulted in even more damage to her face. A lonely and despondent teenager who had to endure the bullying of children and cruel stares of the adults in her community, Bella Rose prayed for a miracle. She would have been happy to walk normally. To be rid of her "hunchback" would have been a bonus. To wish for even a common face that didn't draw stares from strangers would have been asking too much. With no prospects for any semblance of a normal life and condemned to a life of poverty in Homewood, Bella found her miracle. Heeding "a still, small, voice," Travis Hartley, a local hometown hero, befriended Bella and showed her a simple kind of love that she had never known. His singular act of kindness started her on an amazing journey from hopelessness and despair to a life of happiness and accomplishment.

Download or read book Poor Things written by Alasdair Gray and published by Dalkey Archive Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of Alasdair Gray's most brilliant creations, Poor Things is a postmodern revision of Frankenstein that replaces the traditional monster with Bella Baxter--a beautiful young erotomaniac brought back to life with the brain of an infant. Godwin Baxter's scientific ambition to create the perfect companion is realized when he finds the drowned body of Bella, but his dream is thwarted by Dr. Archibald McCandless's jealous love for Baxter's creation. The hilarious tale of love and scandal that ensues would be "the whole story" in the hands of a lesser author (which in fact it is, for this account is actually written by Dr. McCandless). For Gray, though, this is only half the story, after which Bella (a.k.a. Victoria McCandless) has her own say in the matter.Satirizing the classic Victorian novel, Poor Things is a hilarious political allegory and a thought-provoking duel between the desires of men and the independence of women, from one of Scotland's most accomplished authors.
