Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters to Marco These letters, which consist chiefly of notes and observations on a few of the commoner objects of the Southern English Counties which have from time to time come under my notice, were originally written only for the purpose of amusing my dear old friend H. Stacy Marks, r.a., and the suggestion of their publication is owing to him. It is possible, as he said, that when published they may be found acceptable to some who, like himself, love nature for its own sake, untrammelled by the prepossessions that not unfrequently accompany that love among the votaries of science or sport. Book Letter writing Manuals and Instruction from Antiquity to the Present

Download or read book Letter writing Manuals and Instruction from Antiquity to the Present written by Carol Poster and published by Univ of South Carolina Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once nearly as ubiquitous as dictionaries and cookbooks are today, letter-writing manuals and their predecessors served to instruct individuals not only on the art of letter composition but also, in effect, on personal conduct. Poster and Mitchell contend that the study of letter-writing theory, which bridges rhetorical theory and grammatical studies, represents an emerging discipline in need of definition. In this volume, they gather the contributions of eleven experts to sketch the contours of epistolary theory and collect the historic and bibliographic materials - from Isocrates to email - that form the basis for its study.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters From Rome to Friends in England IN strictness, these were not Letters from Rome. A traveller who resides but a short time in that wondrous city, has no leisure to prepare Letters for the press. Scarcely is he able to jot down, with punctuality, the impressions of the passing hour; especially if, to every other claim on his time, are superadded the duties, let me rather say, the privileges) - of a Chaplain. The title of the present volume, nevertheless, sufiiciently describes its general cha motor. Its miscellaneous contents must be ascertained from an inspection of the headings of its chapters. Book Letters From the Sea Side Classic Reprint

Download or read book Letters From the Sea Side Classic Reprint written by UNKNOWN. AUTHOR and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters From the Sea Side What consummate chemistry lurks in its saline depths! It seems to surge and pour its angry surf upon the shore as if in sport, and in defiance of all law, whereas it is stirred and tossed about by storms and currents that are nicely adjusted conditions of its existence. Its active principle of salt is measured by an unerring alchemy that ever freshens and renews; and while a vortex for the filth of the world, it converts all refuse, and debris, in the alembic of its bosom into pure elements that disinfect and animate all creation. The poetry of the ocean is a prolific theme, but if I indulged in rhapsodies you might justly think they were Byron's and not my own. So I will not descant upon its poetic features, but simply remark that it knows no change, and defies the law of mutability that governs all else. It is the most constant friend I find in life. When after months, or years, of absence, I return to its surf-beaten shores it gives me the same honest greeting that saluted me at first. Its integrity is not limited by years: "Time writes no wrinkle on thine azure brow - Such as creation's dawn beheld, thou rollest now." The parish of Westhampton covers many small necks of land each having its individual name derived from Indian tradition. The one on which our house stands is called Ketchabonack - others are Potunk, Mesuck, Oneck, Quiogue, Paukuk, Speonk and Quoque. These titles are, perhaps, not euphonious except to Long Island ears, but they have a local twang that tells its own story of aboriginal custom that must excite the respect of outsiders. We are staying in a farm-house which is occupied by descendants of the family who built it two hundred years ago. The Long Island people are a peculiar race. They are a thrifty set, and they intermarry so frequently that the same families and names continue in the community for centuries. Very seldom a stranger settles in this vicinity. The people have pride of family, and glory in owning and cultivating the acres that belonged to their ancestors. Book A Middle East Mosaic

    Book Details:
  • Author : Bernard Lewis
  • Publisher : Modern Library
  • Release : 2007-12-18
  • ISBN : 0307430421
  • Pages : 495 pages

Download or read book A Middle East Mosaic written by Bernard Lewis and published by Modern Library. This book was released on 2007-12-18 with total page 495 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In times of war and in peace, from the earliest days of the Roman Empire to our own, Westerners have journeyed to the lands of the middle east, bringing back accounts of their adventures and impressions. Yet it was never a one way exchange. From the first Arab embassy to the Vikings in the 9th century to the internet musings of the Taliban, A Middle East Mosaic collects a rich, boisterous literature of cultural exchange. We see the American Revolution through the eyes of a Moroccan Ambassador and the French Revolution through a series of Imperial Ottoman proclamations. We find surprising portraits of Napoleon ("a brigand chief"), TE Lawrence and Ataturk. We learn what George Washington and Machiavelli through t of Turkish politics and hear Flaubert and Thackeray rail against eastern crime and punishment. We peer into Voltaire's business correspondence and follow the footsteps of Mark Twain, Richard Burton, Gertrude Bell and Ibn Battutta, the Marco Polo of the east. Great discoveries are recorded - an Egyptian Ambassador is introduced to electricity and dismisses the spectacle as "frankish trickery;" another pronounces the invention of a secure mail system most useful for assignations. We enter the harem with a 16th century organ maker and emerge with Ottoman reform. It was not until the sixteenth century that the first middle eastern rulers entered into diplomatic relations with European rulers, but trade often precede diplomatic relations. Business men from the days of the crusades against Saladin to the oil prospecting of Samuel Cox and his descendents have seen great possibilities in the markets of the middle east. And throughout the centuries we have been united by war. We witness the outbreak of the Crimean war with Karl Marx and enter Egypt with Napoleon. We observe Arab customs with George Patton and visit Baghdad and Cairo with George F. Kennan in the second world war. When Usama bin Ladin rails against "Jews and crusaders" occupying the holy land, he is rehearsing a grievance with a long history. This symphony of voices, full of wit and wisdom, spite and wonder, suspicion, befuddlement and occasional insight, is ordered and explained by our foremost living historian of the middle east. The fruit of a lifetime of scholarship and erudition, A Middle East Mosaic is a dazzling capstone to a brilliant career. In a spirited reappraisal of western views of the east and eastern views of the west over the last two thousand years, Bernard Lewis gives us a brilliant over-view of 2,000 years of commerce, diplomacy, war and exploration. This book is a delight, a treasury of stories drawn from letters, diaries and histories, but also from unpublished archives and previously untranslated accounts. Diplomats and interpreters, slaves, soldiers, pilgrims and missionaries, princes and spies, businessmen, doctors and priests all pour forth their stories of the people and events that shaped history. A Middle East Mosaic cannot fail to appeal to anyone with an appetite for history and a curiosity about the vagaries of cultural exchange.
