Book MacArthur and West Point

Download or read book MacArthur and West Point written by Sherman L. Fleek and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2024-09-02 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few figures loom larger in the story of the United States Military Academy at West Point—or in US military history in general—than Douglas MacArthur. In this wide-ranging book, acclaimed military historian Sherman L. Fleek explores the mutual influence between the United States Military Academy and General of the Army Douglas MacArthur. More than a simple narration of MacArthur’s time at the academy—both as a cadet and as superintendent—this book examines how MacArthur and the institution that he regarded as a second home shaped each of them, along with the subsequent impacts both entities had on history and the conduct of the US military. Perhaps the preeminent figure among the handful of those who have guided and changed the direction of the academy at West Point and the “long gray line” of those who have passed through its halls, MacArthur frequently referred to the institution in letters, speeches, official documents, and personal contacts throughout his lifetime. Although MacArthur was only in residence at the military academy for seven years, in many ways he has never been absent from West Point, nor was the academy ever absent from the man. In MacArthur and West Point, Fleek offers readers a new perspective on the truly reciprocal nature of the longstanding relationship between one of the US military’s most significant historical figures and one of its most venerated institutions.

Book General MacArthur Speeches and Reports 1908 1964

Download or read book General MacArthur Speeches and Reports 1908 1964 written by and published by Turner Publishing Company. This book was released on 2000-06-14 with total page 1035 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The two-year search for General Douglas MacArthur's speeches and reports was truly a labor of love. My Administrative Assistant, Ellen Schaefer, and I culled over 1,000 sources including memories, biographies, histories, military magazines such as the Army and Air Force Journals, unit histories, commercial magazines and newspapers. Magazines included such publications as National Geographic, Life Magazine and many esoteric less circulated literature such as Military Magazine, Retired Officers Magazine, Air Force Magazine and so many others. We received guidance and assistance from such sources as the U.S. Military Academy, the Engineering School at Ft. Leavenworth, the Command and General Staff School at Leavenworth, the Army War College, the MacArthur Archives Director James Zobel, the Library of Congress, the War Department; the sources seemed endless. We do believe we were able to capture all the major public speeches and reports covering MacArthur's truly productive years from 1908 through 1964. Contains more than 125 speeches/reports. It will be interesting to note, MacArthur established his personality early in his military career and never veered from this. His admonition from his Mother when MacArthur was a student at West Point was, never cheat, never lie, never tattle"". Adhering to this edict MacArthur offered to resign from the Academy rather than answer questions from the Academy panel investigating hazing and harassment by a group of fellow students. MacArthur continued to develop his hard line against political and military intrigue by resolving to always do what he believed right even if he knew no one was watching. Further he was determined never to refuse to carryout the order of a senior officer - never be insubordinate to constituted authority.""

The first address took place on April 19, 1951 and was held before a joint meeting of the two houses of United States Congress—the House of Representatives and the Senate—and took place in the Hall of the House of Representatives. This meeting followed on just one week from MacArthur’s removal from command by President Harry S. Truman. The second address was held on May 12, 1921 and was given to The Members of the Association of Graduates, U.S.M.A., The Corps of Cadets, and Distinguished Guests. It was given on the occasion of MacArthur’s acceptance of the Sylvanus Thayer Award for outstanding service to the nation, which had gone to Eisenhower the year before. The event was held at the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York.

Book General MacArthur Wisdom and Visions

Download or read book General MacArthur Wisdom and Visions written by and published by Turner Publishing Company. This book was released on 2000-06-14 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: MacArthur's supremacy as a true conversationalist is readily documented. This work on the wisdom and sayings of MacArthur is presented as a new-classicist document in that almost every item listed came from the mouth of General MacArthur and from his writings. He wrote almost all of his own speeches with eloquence in all of them. These speeches stand out as note-worthy because they were made immediately after periods of great historical significance. In these speeches he seemed to be speaking strictly from his heart. Regardless of the individual's attitude toward politics, religion, military or civilian service, his words sound spiritual and practical.

Book excerpt: On June 12, 1919, Brigadier General Douglas MacArthur slipped quietly into the command of the garrison in the Hudson Highlands, more commonly known as the United States Military Academy at West Point. He had chosen to forego the usual extravagant change of command ceremony and the Corps Review stating the, “They'll see me soon and often enough.” MacArthur was, at thirty-nine, one of the youngest superintendents in the history of the Academy. He was also the youngest brigadier general in the Army. His career had been exemplary, and his near legendary exploits on the battlefields of Europe in World War I were reflected by the two Distinguished Service Crosses and the seven Silver Stars that hung from the lapel of his uniform. In the search for a man of character and strength to rebuild the Academy, the Army Chief of Staff, General Peyton March, had with good reason looked to Douglas MacArthur.
