Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters From Three Continents Something less than two years since, I crossed the Atlan tic, in search of health. Partly to gratify friends, and partly to while away rainy days, I commenced writing letters to'the Louisville Journal; and the favorable manner in which they were received induced me to continue them throughout a tour of eighteen months. At the solicitation of the;same friends, I have collected these letters into a volume, with a hope that those of the public who may read them, may not find them wholly uninteresting. It is almost useless to say, that they are not presented to the world as a book of travels they are simply what the title of the volume declares them to be letters from the celebrated places on the three older conti nents. Written among the scenes they attempt to describe, they give the candid impressions of the moment, 'however these might be Opposed to the ordinarily received opinions. I fear I have often been too frank to be popular; but as; make no pretensions to infallibility, my opinions must pass for what they are worth. The letters on the English seem, even to myself, upon after-perusal, too general, and perhaps too severe, ih their denunciations but as they rec'orded the impressions made upon me at the time, and as I wish to give the letters as they originally appeared, I shall make no alterations. Ifvolume fails, I shall be. Consoled a few, at least will be pleased lasting form; if it succeeds I shall experience which all but especially the young, tion of their countrymen. The author. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters From the Continent The matter of Travels therefore, will only make an incidental part of these Letters; and will only be noticed so far as it may give rise to the subject which may occupy the excursions of the author's mind. Faculties ever at work, an heart ever in motion, weave webs, and build castles, ln every situation which they fondly desire to preserve and communicate. There are few pleasures equal to those of literature: there are scarcely any so innocent and pure: scarcely any so noble: and scarcely any so beneficial: when their fruits are not buried in the bosoms of the cultivators. I never rest till I have obtained an outline, at least, ofthe history of the place that I inhabit but I shall not trouble the reader with what may be easily found in printed books. Book The New Georgia Encyclopedia Companion to Georgia Literature

Download or read book The New Georgia Encyclopedia Companion to Georgia Literature written by Hugh Ruppersburg and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2011-08-15 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Georgia has played a formative role in the writing of America. Few states have produced a more impressive array of literary figures, among them Conrad Aiken, Erskine Caldwell, James Dickey, Joel Chandler Harris, Carson McCullers, Flannery O'Connor, Jean Toomer, and Alice Walker. This volume contains biographical and critical discussions of Georgia writers from the nineteenth century to the present as well as other information pertinent to Georgia literature. Organized in alphabetical order by author, the entries discuss each author's life and work, contributions to Georgia history and culture, and relevance to wider currents in regional and national literature. Lists of recommended readings supplement most entries. Especially important Georgia books have their own entries: works of social significance such as Lillian Smith's Strange Fruit, international publishing sensations like Margaret Mitchell's Gone With the Wind, and crowning artistic achievements including Jean Toomer's Cane. The literary culture of the state is also covered, with information on the Georgia Review and other journals; the Georgia Center for the Book, which promotes authors and reading; and the Townsend Prize, given in recognition of the year's best fiction. This is an essential volume for readers who want both to celebrate and learn more about Georgia's literary heritage.
