Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters From Europe These letters, now collected into one volume, in response to what scemato be a very general desire on the part of my friends and the public, were written as well to occupy the hours of anxiety com mon to all strangers in foreign lands, as to present to the readers of the philadelphia press and washington chronicle my honest impressions of men and things abroad. Some errors may have occurred in the haste of unassisted composition, but every line was inspired by a sincere desire to pro mote the cause of human progress, and to prove to my countrymen the incalculable advantages of their own government over that of any other nation upon earth. Book The Letters of Mark Twain and Joseph Hopkins Twichell

Download or read book The Letters of Mark Twain and Joseph Hopkins Twichell written by Harold K. Bush and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2017-04-15 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the complete texts of all known correspondence between Samuel L. Clemens (Mark Twain) and Joseph Hopkins Twichell. Theirs was a rich exchange. The long, deep friendship of Clemens and Twichell—a Congregationalist minister of Hartford, Connecticut—rarely fails to surprise, given the general reputation Twain has of being antireligious. Beyond this, an examination of the growth, development, and shared interests characterizing that friendship makes it evident that as in most things about him, Mark Twain defies such easy categorization or judgment. From the moment of their first encounter in 1868, a rapport was established. When Twain went to dinner at the Twichell home, he wrote to his future wife that he had “got up to go at 9.30 PM, & never sat down again—but [Twichell] said he was bound to have his talk out—& I was willing—& so I only left at 11.” This conversation continued, in various forms, for forty-two years—in both men’s houses, on Hartford streets, on Bermuda roads, and on Alpine trails. The dialogue between these two men—one an inimitable American literary figure, the other a man of deep perception who himself possessed both narrative skill and wit—has been much discussed by Twain biographers. But it has never been presented in this way before: as a record of their surviving correspondence; of the various turns of their decades-long exchanges; of what Twichell described in his journals as the “long full feast of talk” with his friend, whom he would always call “Mark.”

Book The Elsewhere

Download or read book The Elsewhere written by Adam Zachary Newton and published by Univ of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 2005-06-27 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Elsewhere." Or, midbar-biblical Hebrew for both "wilderness" and "speech." A place of possession and dispossession, loss and nostalgia. But also a place that speaks. Ingeniously using a Talmudic interpretive formula about the disposition of boundaries, Newton explores narratives of "place, flight, border, and beyond." The writers of The Elsewhere are a disparate company of twentieth-century memoirists and fabulists from the Levant (Palestine/Israel, Egypt) and East Central Europe. Together, their texts-cunningly paired so as to speak to one another in mutually revelatory ways-narrate the paradox of the "near distance."

Book The Mark Twain Encyclopedia

Download or read book The Mark Twain Encyclopedia written by J. R. LeMaster and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 1993 with total page 952 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A reference guide to the great American author (1835-1910) for students and general readers. The approximately 740 entries, arranged alphabetically, are essentially a collection of articles, ranging significantly in length and covering a variety of topics pertaining to Twain's life, intellectual milieu, literary career, and achievements. Because so much of Twain's writing reflects Samuel Clemens's personal experience, particular attention is given to the interface between art and life, i.e., between imaginative reconstructions and their factual sources of inspiration. Each entry is accompanied by a selective bibliography to guide readers to sources of additional information. Annotation copyright by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rambles in Europe: In a Series of Familiar Letters When the writer of the following letters left home for a short tour in the Old World he promised some friends an occasional letter for the periodicals of which they were the editors. He endeavored to fulfil this engagement, and a number of these letters were issued in the Zion's Herald, and others in the Ladies' Repository, published in Cincinnati, Ohio. Some of the letters were brought home by the writer, and subsequently published. It was his practice to take notes of all that interested him; and these rough and imperfect sketches were subsequently filled up and brought into their present shape. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Tennessean Abroad, or Letters From Europe, Africa, and Asia The increased facilities for locomotion and the recognised brotherhood of nations have brought the advantages of travel within the reach of many to whom they were for merly denied. Thousands are every year availing them selves of this pleasantest method of gaining correct ideas of the men and 4 manners of the time, and visiting for themselves the classic spots which have for so many ages inspired the soul of the poet, and guided the pen cil of the painter. In this pilgrimage to the shrines of the Beautiful and the haunts of the Romantic, America has not been without her representatives. There is' scarcely a spot in the Old World that gems the page of history or lives in the poet's song, where the foot of our countryman has not pressed. Some travel from curiosity, others to gain knowledge, While not a few like the birdling of Jenny Lind, go, not knowing why.
