Book Travel Letters From New Zealand Australia and Africa Classic Reprint

Download or read book Travel Letters From New Zealand Australia and Africa Classic Reprint written by E. W. Howe and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-16 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Travel Letters From New Zealand, Australia and Africa Saturday, january 4, 1913. - This is written in the Pacific ocean, on the ship Sonoma, two days out of Sydney, Australia, where we expect to land next Mon day. We have been on the ship seventeen days, and the passengers and servants seem as familiar as people with whom we have associated many years. In the main, we have had a pleasant voyage, although the weather was somewhat boisterous the first few days out of San Francisco. We stopped eight hours at Honolulu, and five hours at Pago Pago, in the Samoa Islands. There was an elaborate celebration on board on Christ mas day, which included a big dinner, speeches, and a dance, and we also had a similar New Year celebration, although we actually had no New Year's day. At a late hour on the 3lst of December we crossed the l80th meridian, and, when we awoke the following morning, the date was January 2, 1913. Ships sailing westward drop a day on crossing the 180th meridian, and ships going eastward add a day. In traveling toward the sun, the day increases in length, and, in a trip around the world, this increase amounts to exactly twenty four hours. Every day we set our watches back from twenty to thirty minutes, and when we reach Canton. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters From Australia The following Letters were most of them written in Australia in 1867, and were published in the Spectator in the course of that and the following year. Some are reprinted without alteration, others have been added to and altered, and others are new. No attempt has been made to mould them into a continuous or complete account either of the past history or present condition of the three colonies which they endeavour to describe. Those of the colonies which are old enough to possess a history have had it already written. And as for their present state, it would be presumptuous to suppose that fifteen months divided between them could have sufficed to enable me, circumstanced as I was, to give anything like a complete account of countries so large, or to obtain an accurate understanding of all the various political questions and phenomena presented by them. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Emigrant's Home Letters In launching this little book upon the stormy waves of the sea of criticism I am not troubled by many fears. I believe that the name of Henry Parkes will yet be dear to the heart of every patriotic son of Federated Australia, and that all concerning him will be very precious in their eyes. The mistakes, the errors, and the failures of the last years of his life will be wiped away as one would brush dust from a beloved dead face. Who that is just will judge of him by the years between seventy and eighty? No! By the glorious aims, by the high hopes, by the great achievements, and the ringing eloquence of his grand manhood will he be judged; and when Australasia takes her place among the great nations of the world, his name will be inscribed in golden letters upon the annals of her history. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Glimpses of Four Continents: Letters Written During a Tour in Australia, New Zealand,& North America, in 1893 What possessed you two to think of going to Australia? This question has been put to me and my cabin-mate so often that I almost feel as if we ought to apologise for having gone there and enjoyed ourselves so much. The idea of this journey had a very simple beginning, viz., seeing my cousins wife making blue cotton pinafores for her little girl to wear on board ship, and talking of their voyage to New Zealand as others would talk of a trip to Paris. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Trifles From a Tourist: In Letters From Abroad The following Letters were written to me by my son Russell, during his trip round the world (188 5 - 6) in which he was accompanied by his friends J. Alexander Harmer, of Norwich, and James R. Roberts, of London, and in the course of which he visited the United States, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, China, Japan, Ceylon, and Egypt. These Letters were written without the shadow of an idea that they would ever be printed. The suggestion, however, was made to me that they should be put in type for private circulation, and my husband and I felt it a pleasure to accede to it, as it will enable many of our friends to share, to some extent, in the enjoyment of this globe-trot. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Trip Around the World: A Series of Letters We are sure that if all the churches in America could have seen what we saw - the many large churches, and so intensely alive to the interests of the kingdom of our com mon Lord, they could not help but thank God and take courage. It appeared to us that the churches of Australia have, for their years and opportunities, gone beyond what their brethren elsewhere have done. With many fears and some hopes, we venture to send forth these letters to the churches, hoping that they may prove to be at least one link in a golden chain of Christian love and w'orld-wide sympathy, that shall help to bind them all together. We pray that a rich blessing from the great Lord of the harvest may rest upon them, and cause them to minister to the joys of His people, and the salvation of men. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Australian Ramble: Or a Summer in Australia At home sending out a representative to Australia, and so carefully planning his route that he was to preach at Adelaide on the Sunday morning, and at Melbourne, some hundreds of miles away, in the after noon, and that was before they had a railway. There are many who still think that a colony is a place where men are fortunate, as a late colonial governor remarked, if they enjoy three meals a day and a place to sleep in, where the inhabitants sit down to dinner in their shirt-sleeves, and think it a hardship if they take off their boots when they go to bed. But the greatest fallacy of all is the supposition that in a colony anyone can get a living, no matter how ih competent he may have proved himself at home. We laugh, but are we much wiser now? In Fleet Street last week, as I bade good-bye to a friend, he said to me, I have a boy who will be coming home just as you land. I sent him out with the best introductions. He has been six months in Melbourne and Sydney and elsewhere, and can find nothing to do, and now I have to get him home again.' It will be something if, in the course of my letters, and as the result of my inquiries, I Shall be able to save fathers and mothers at home the trouble and expense and pain of such fruitless ventures, and it will be better still if I can help men and women at home to understand and. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Etta Jones was not a World War II soldier or a war time spy. She was a school teacher whose life changed forever on that Sunday morning in June 1942 when the Japanese military invaded Attu Island and Etta became a prisoner of war. Etta and her sister moved to the Territory of Alaska in 1922. She planned to stay only one year as a vacation, but this 40 something year old nurse from back east met Foster Jones and fell in love. They married and for nearly twenty years they lived, worked and taught in remote Athabascan, Alutiiq, Yup’ik and Aleut villages where they were the only outsiders. Their last assignment was Attu. After the invasion, Etta became a prisoner of war and spent 39 months in Japanese POW sites located in Yokohama and Totsuka. She was the first female Caucasian taken prisoner by a foreign enemy on the North American Continent since the War of 1812, and she was the first American female released by the Japanese at the end of World War II. Using descriptive letters that she penned herself, her unpublished manuscript, historical documents and personal interviews with key people who were involved with events as they happened, her extraordinary story is told for the first time in this book.

Quotations from these are noted as from Manly Archives. A few of the earlier letters have already been published by the late Cardinal Moran in his monumental History of the Catholic Church in Australia. The vast scope of that History left but little space for a full account of the early days of the Australian Church, and I feel that the Cardinal would have been the first to welcome this more detailed account of a period to which he gives but passing notice in a general survey.
