Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Counsels of an Invalid: Letters on Religious Subjects The Letters of George Wilson were among the most characteristic effusions of his genius. His intimate friends, with one consent, pro nounced him the most delightful letter-writer of their circle; and it has been justly felt by the public, that of the great and varied merits of his biography, perhaps the chief is the skill and taste with which these memorials have been made to tell the tale of his life, and to paint the full pic ture of his character. After a selection of corre spondence so copious and diversified, it may be thought by some that anything more is super 'fiuous. This objection will disappear when it is known how small a proportion the published lettersbear to the mass, not less interesting and attrac tive, which remains untouched. Probably many have hoped, with the writer of this Prefatory Note, that additional selections would be issued, and some, perhaps, have wished that, in such a case, these should be less miscellaneous and fragment ary than was demanded by the laws of biography, and should rather revolve around some one topic of central interest; while of all such topics, there can have been little difference of Opinion that religion deserved the preference, both from its own paramount importance, and from the quali fications, in all respects high, in some singular, of the writer for treating it with success in the form of letters. Book Meditations on Christian Dogma Vol 1

Download or read book Meditations on Christian Dogma Vol 1 written by James Bellord and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Meditations on Christian Dogma, Vol. 1: With an Introduction Letter From the Cardinal Archbishop of Westminster In these meditations an attempt is made to present, in a form adapted to the present day, a popular and devotional summary of the immense treasures contained in Catholic Theology. Professed Theologians have almost universally addressed themselves to the leisured and learned, and treated their subject in a strictly scientific manner. Dogmatic Theology has therefore come to be spoken of as an arid technical science, and one that is more likely to extinguish than to nurture spirituality. One of the first who undertook to develop side by side the intellectual and devotional aspects of Christian Dogma was the Seraphic Doctor, St. Bonaventure. The same idea inspired Vincent Contenson of the Order of Preachers, in his Theologia Mentis et Cordis. In two important works which still enjoy the widest repute, the Elevations on the Mysteries, and the Meditations on the Gospels, Bossuet set forth briefly a popular exposition of the principal mysteries of religion. Pere d'Argentan, a Capuchin, is the author of three standard works on the Grandeurs of God, of Jesus Christ, and of the Blessed Virgin. In later times various writers have published abridgments of theology, and of St. Thomas' Summa in particular. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters of Spiritual Counsel and Guidance These Letters form no part of Keble's General Correspondence, which yet re mains to be published. Materials for it had been collected, and the work begun by a far more competent Editor; but, when he was called to fill the place of one whose memory will long be held in affectionate veneration, not only in his own diocese, but throughout the Church of England, Dr. Moberly felt that the calls upon his time and thoughts would be too weighty and manifold to allow of his continuing the work. At the request of the Keble family, it was undertaken by the present Editor, and the Letters, then in Dr. Moberly's possession, were, with the consent of those who had furnished them, transferred to his hands. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Letters of Jesus Lenten Lectures It is a time for earnest seeking unto the Lord to discover and amend what is defective in our hearts and lives, and for the quickening of our endeavors to be in full accord with the divine requirements. Christians need such seasons. The sensibility of conscience is liable to become dulled. Our real ization Of the need of the Saviour, and our hold of faith upon Him as our only hope, require fre quent deepening and intensifying. We must be times turn aside from our ordinary wavs and indulgences to consider what we are, where we are, and whither we are going. We cannot make progress in the divine life without oft stimulation to the reverence and ardor of our supplications, faith, and resolves. And, though other times and seasons may and should be used for these ends, Lent, with its special services and prayers, is intended to subserve such spiritual purposes, and well answers to them. Book Prayers and Meditations Classic Reprint

Download or read book Prayers and Meditations Classic Reprint written by Samuel Johnson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Prayers and Meditations He knew the little books contained nothing contrary to religion, and he was therefore perfectly content to let what was in them go forth. We were all told in our childhood that 'I don't care' came to a bad end. Johnson, I must suppose, is the proverbial exception, for no man cared less than he what people said or might say. Pious authors of the first rank are sufficiently rare to make us thankful for Prayers and Meditations, and Johnson's piety is as indisputable as it is interesting. It represents a type always prevalent among the laity, but exceedingly ill-represented in our literature. It is not the primitive piety of the Early Church, nor is it the Evangelicalism of a later day, still less the 'enthusiasm' of the Methodist Revival. There is something mediaeval about its gloom something Jansenist about its mysticism, whilst there is not a little of the Eighteenth Century in that 'obstinate rationality' which, as the doctor himself half proudly, half ruefully admitted, made communion with the Roman Church an impossibility for him. Religion to Johnson was an awful thing. He never learnt to take his case on Zion. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Of the nearly ninety emperors who ruled in Constantinople, Manuel II Palaeologus (r. 1391–1425) was one of the most sympathetic as a human being and one of the most gifted as a statesman. A man of broad intellectual interests, he was also dedicated to his God-given task of preserving what remained of the Byzantine Empire when he came to power. This conflict is reflected in his letters, written in such distant places as Ankara, Paris, and London. The correspondence provides new insights into his reign and enable us to understand better the emperor himself, his friends, and the times in which they lived.

Download or read book A Guide to the Good Life written by William B. Irvine and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2008-11-04 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the great fears many of us face is that despite all our effort and striving, we will discover at the end that we have wasted our life. In A Guide to the Good Life, William B. Irvine plumbs the wisdom of Stoic philosophy, one of the most popular and successful schools of thought in ancient Rome, and shows how its insight and advice are still remarkably applicable to modern lives. In A Guide to the Good Life, Irvine offers a refreshing presentation of Stoicism, showing how this ancient philosophy can still direct us toward a better life. Using the psychological insights and the practical techniques of the Stoics, Irvine offers a roadmap for anyone seeking to avoid the feelings of chronic dissatisfaction that plague so many of us. Irvine looks at various Stoic techniques for attaining tranquility and shows how to put these techniques to work in our own life. As he does so, he describes his own experiences practicing Stoicism and offers valuable first-hand advice for anyone wishing to live better by following in the footsteps of these ancient philosophers. Readers learn how to minimize worry, how to let go of the past and focus our efforts on the things we can control, and how to deal with insults, grief, old age, and the distracting temptations of fame and fortune. We learn from Marcus Aurelius the importance of prizing only things of true value, and from Epictetus we learn how to be more content with what we have. Finally, A Guide to the Good Life shows readers how to become thoughtful observers of their own lives. If we watch ourselves as we go about our daily business and later reflect on what we saw, we can better identify the sources of distress and eventually avoid that pain in our life. By doing this, the Stoics thought, we can hope to attain a truly joyful life.

Book excerpt: Now in a fully corrected edition, one of the true spiritual classics of the twentieth century. Published for the first time with an index and Cardinal Hans Urs von Balthasar’s afterword, this new English publication of Meditations on the Tarot is the landmark edition of one of the most important works of esoteric Christianity. Written anonymously and published posthumously, as was the author’s wish, the intention of this work is for the reader to find a relationship with the author in the spiritual dimensions of existence. The author wanted not to be thought of as a personality who lived from 1900 to 1973, but as a friend who is communicating with us from beyond the boundaries of ordinary life. Using the 22 major arcana of the tarot deck as a means to explore some of humanity’s most penetrating spiritual questions, Meditations on the Tarot has attracted an unprecedented range of praise from across the spiritual spectrum.
