  • Pages : 258 pages

Download or read book Hunters in the Shallows written by Curtis L. Nelson and published by Potomac Books. This book was released on 1998 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hunters in the Shallows is the first book to examine the development and role of the small torpedo boat in U.S. naval history, from William Cushing's heroic attack on the Confederate ram Albemarle in 1864, to PT operations in World War II. Moreover, it offers the first critical analysis of the PT's operational value. Culled from primary sources, this myth-buster covers the inside story of the scandalous 1939 Elco deal, offers new insight into the roles of Franklin D. Roosevelt and Douglas MacArthur in PT development, dares a shocking reappraisal of MacArthur's dramatic escape from Corregidor by PT boat in 1942, and reassesses the sinking of John F. Kennedy's PT-109. It also contains numerous photos and illustrations tracing American small torpedo boat development from the Civil War through World War II. Sure to be controversial, Hunters in the Shallows is a must read for naval professionals, military historians, and PT boat buffs alike.

Book An Address of Henry Clay to the Public

Download or read book An Address of Henry Clay to the Public written by Henry Clay and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-30 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Address of Henry Clay, to the Public: Containing Certain Testimony in Reputation of the Charges Against Him, Made by Gen. Andrew Jackson, Touching the Last Presidential Election I the charge bad originated with Mr. George Kramer's letter to the Columbian Observer. But recent disclosures of General Jackson and his partisans, satisfactorily establish that, although the sternness ol'mr. Kremer's patriotism rompted him to cry aloud and spare not, he must be stripped o the borrowed merit of original inven tion, which impartial justice requires should now be transferred 8 more distinguished personage. A brief summary of incontesta cle facts will evince the justness of this observation. It was the policy with which the political campaign was conduct cd in the Winter 1824 - 95, by the es of the General, in the first instance to practice stratagem with my friends and me. Ac cordingly the arts of persuasion and flattery were employed. But as I did not hasten to give in my adhesion. And remained most mysteriously atlent, in other words had not converted myself into a boisterous and zealous partizan of Gen. Jackson, it became na cessary to change that policy, and to substitute intimidation for blandishment. Mr. Kramer presented himself as a fit agent in this new work. He was ardent, impelled by a blind and infuriate zeal, and irresponsible, and possessed at least the faculty of clamorous vociferation. His letter to the Columbian Observer was prepared, and he was instructed to sign and transmit it. That he was not the author of the letter he has deliberately admitted to Mr. Crownin shield, former Secretary of the Navy. That he was not acquainted with its contents, that is, dtd not comprehendthe import ot'its terms, has been suflicientl established. To Gov. Kent, Col. Little.
