Download or read book Research Handbook on Post Conflict State Building written by Paul R. Williams and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2020-08-28 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a conflict ends and the parties begin working towards a durable peace, practitioners and peacebuilders are faced with the thrilling possibilities and challenges of building new or reformed political, security, judicial, social, and economic structures. This Handbook analyzes these elements of post-conflict state building through the lens of international law, which provides a framework through which the authors contextualize and examine the many facets of state building in relation to the legal norms, processes, and procedures that guide such efforts across the globe. The volume aims to provide not only an introduction to and explanation of prominent topics in state building, but also a perceptive analysis that augments ongoing conversations among researchers, lawyers, and advocates engaged in the field.

Download or read book International Peacekeeping written by Boris Kondoch and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peacekeeping has been the technique most frequently used by, and associated with, the United Nations to end conflicts and to preserve peace. In addition, international and regional organizations have also performed peacekeeping functions. Since the establishment of the first UN peacekeeping mission, UNEF I, in 1956, international lawyers have raised questions about the legal aspects of these operations. Traditionally, they analyzed the constitutional basis for peacekeeping and tried to allocate the authority under the UN Charter for peacekeeping among the Security Council, the General Assembly and the Secretary General. They discussed the use of force by peacekeepers, the applicability of international humanitarian law, as well as the responsibilities and liabilities of peacekeepers. Since the end of the cold war, peacekeeping operations have become more complex. In the first forty years, peacekeepers functioned mainly as buffer zones between warring parties and monitored cease-fires. Nowadays, they are increasingly engaged in internal rather than international conflicts and perform a multitude of tasks. Among others, they act as civilian administrators, oversee elections and monitor human rights. These changes have raised new legal problems. Which human rights obligations exist for peacekeepers? Do peacekeepers have to intervene if they witness war crimes and acts of genocide? How are they protected under international law? What is the legal framework of UN administrations like in Kosovo and East Timor? In order to enhance a better understanding of these legal issues arising from peacekeeping operations, a collection of articles written by the leading experts in the field have been compiled in the volume, International Peacekeeping.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United Nations and Cambodia, 1991-1995 chronicles one of the most complex peace-keeping operations in the history of the United Nations- the United Nations Transitional Authority in Cambodia (UNTAC)- and brings together, for the first time, the texts of mora than 100 key United Nations documents relating to what was, at the time, an uprecedented endeavour in both size and scope. Complementing the documents are a detailed chronology, and an introduction by Secretary-General Boutros Boutros Ghali which offers a comprehensive account of the Organization's central role in fostering the peace process, repatriating more than 360,000 refugees and organizing the elections of May 1993 that led to the formation of a new, democratically elected Cambodian Government. The reproduced texts include: 1) Resolutions of the General Assembly and the Security Council; 2) Reports of United Nations Secretaries-General; 3) the historic Agreements on a Comprehensive Political Settlement of the Cambodia Conflict, signed in Paris in 1991.
Download or read book East Timor and the International Community written by Heike Krieger and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The long-running dispute over East Timor was for many years an unresolved item on the agenda of the international community. It involved issues of self-determination, non-recognition, and human rights. This book was first published in 1996, five years before East Timor regained its independence. It thus serves as a record of the basic materials relating to the historical background, to the circumstances of the Indonesian invasion and following incorporation of East Timor, to the subsequent development of the dispute in the light of the international community's response to it, and, finally, to the 1995 judgment of the International Court of Justice in the case concerning East Timor between Portugal and Australia. The volume contains a substantive introduction which places the documents in context and provides an overview of the political and legal issues of the dispute.
