Download or read book The Declaration in Script and Print written by John Bidwell and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2024-07-04 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perhaps the single most important founding document of the United States of America, the Declaration of Independence became both a work of art and a mass-market commodity during the nineteenth century. In this book, graphic arts historian John Bidwell traces the fascinating history of Declaration prints and broadsides and reveals the American public’s changing attitudes toward this iconic text. The new and improved intaglio, letterpress, and lithographic printing technologies of the nineteenth century led to increasingly elaborate reproductions of the Declaration. Some were touted as precious relics; others were aimed at the bottom of the market. Rival publishers claimed to have produced the definitive visualization of the document, attacking the character and patriotism of other firms even as they promoted their own artistic abilities and attention to detail. Meanwhile, painter John Trumbull attempted to sell subscriptions for an engraved version of his Declaration painting, and John Quincy Adams—then secretary of state—commissioned an official 1823 edition in response to the feuding facsimilists seeking government patronage. Bidwell unravels the intricate web of rivalries surrounding these competing publications. Featuring a comprehensive checklist of nearly two hundred prints and broadsides drawn from various collections, this engrossing history highlights the proliferation and widespread influence of the Declaration of Independence on American popular culture. It will be equally esteemed by general readers interested in American history, print and autograph collectors, and art and book historians.

Fearful for the country's future, [he] pled with his countrymen to resist hyper-partisanship and foreign alliances. He called for unity among 'citizens by birth or choice,' defended religious pluralism, called for national education ... Avlon offers ... insight into Washington's his final public days, presenting not only a startling description of the perilous state of the new nation but a rare view of the man behind the usual face of a tranquil First Father"

Download or read book The Papers of Henry Clay written by Henry Clay and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2014-10-17 with total page 946 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This third volume in the ten-volume series covers the career of Henry Clay from the Second Session of the Sixteenth Congress, where he engineered the second Missouri Compromise, to the presidential election of 1824, when he found himself eliminated as a candidate. Upon his return from Congress in 1821, Clay practiced law and interested himself in Transylvania University, among other things. Elected again to the House of Representatives and to the Speakership in the Eighteenth Congress, Clay resumed his leadership in national affairs; his concerns at this period were principally with the Monroe Doctrine, the Spanish and Greek revolutions, and internal improvements and the tariff. A continuing thread in the volume is the presidential campaign of 1824. Clay's correspondence illustrates the changes in political techniques brought about by the emergence of the Jacksonian type of campaign. Sectionalism, already revealed as a danger to the Union, continued as an important issue. Clay's optimistic anticipation of his election of course proved incorrect, and the volume ends with Clay in the powerful but uncomfortable position of being able, by throwing his support to one of three candidates before the House of Representatives, to choose the next President of the United States. Publication of this book was assisted by a grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission.

Hendrickson argue that the first Bush Administration, in its attempts to address the challenges posed by the new global realties, betrayed the fundamental ideals on which this country was founded. Taking the Gulf War as their starting point, Tucker and Hendrickson dissect President Bushs vision of a new world order, exposing its inconsistency with Americas traditional diplomatic principles.

Download or read book American Sanctuary written by A. Roger Ekirch and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2018-11-20 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1797 the bloodiest mutiny ever suffered by the Royal Navy took place on the British frigate HMS Hermione off the coast of Puerto Rico. Jonathan Robbins, a reputed American sailor who had been impressed into service, made his way to American shores. President John Adams bowed to Britain’s request for his extradition. Convicted of murder and piracy by a court-martial in Jamaica, Robbins was hanged. Adams’s catastrophic miscalculation ignited a political firestorm, only to be fanned by Robbins’s failure to receive his constitutional rights of due process and trial by jury by an American court. American Sanctuary brilliantly lays out in riveting detail the story of how the Robbins affair, amid the turbulent presidential campaign of 1800, inflamed the new nation and set in motion a constitutional crisis, resulting in Adams’s defeat and Thomas Jefferson’s election as the third president of the United States. Robbins’s martyrdom led directly to the country’s historic decision to grant political asylum to foreign refugees—a major achievement in fulfilling the promise of American independence.
Download or read book The Transformation of Political Culture written by Ronald P. Formisano and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Not only does this splendid book unearth much fresh material from so well tilled a field as Massachusetts political history. It also advances an important and provocative interpretation of the evolution of the American party system."--The Journal of American History. "Supersedes everything else written on the Massachusetts politics of the half-century after 1790. It is broadly conceived, detailed, sensitive, and often judicious and persuasive."--The New England Quarterly. Focusing on the gradual acceptance of parties by a fundamentally antipartisan society, and on the advent of social movements inthe 1820s and 1830 and their relation to the formation of mass parties, Formisano demonstrates the role of such factors as class, industrialization, religion, and ideology in party formation.
Download or read book Founding Fictions written by Jennifer R. Mercieca and published by University of Alabama Press. This book was released on 2010-04-15 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An extended analysis of how Americans imagined themselves as citizens between 1764 and 1845 Founding Fictions develops the concept of a “political fiction,” or a narrative that people tell about their own political theories, and analyzes how republican and democratic fictions positioned American citizens as either romantic heroes, tragic victims, or ironic partisans. By re-telling the stories that Americans have told themselves about citizenship, Mercieca highlights an important contradiction in American political theory and practice: that national stability and active citizen participation are perceived as fundamentally at odds.
