Download or read book Our Hidden Settlement written by Mona Ballge Miron and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2023-08-07 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My journey goes back in time to Burton, Michigan’s history, when it was still the “Atherton Settlement” (1835-1855). Genesee County was formed in 1836, Michigan wasn’t even a state, until 1837. This was an exciting time for new families to settle here, finding land of their own, for the first time, freedom of religion and new adventures. I’ll be going through the yearly traditions behind the holidays and inventions along the way. I hope you enjoy my historical journey. Learning about the settlers on Thread River was a lot of fun, how they made the Atherton Trail; the four Atherton families working together to survive the cold winters. They built strong shelters, saved food and wood for the winter, with the help of the natives. In 1835 the Atherton Settlement was established; the Atherton families built a strong community over the next twelve months with thirty families. They built their homes, barns, wagons, three churches, a mill, and a trading post. The first school in the settlement was founded in 1836, the Atherton School, was a one room schoolhouse built on the corner of Atherton Trail and Center Road where the Burton Memorial Library sits now. Betsey Atherton was the first teacher. Throughout my research, we have a lot to be thankful for; especially the four Atherton men that were brave enough to stay and never give up on the settlement. As more people joined the settlement for the next 20 years, some had military backgrounds, and mostly coming from New York. With all manner of trades to prosper as the community, when more schools were needed, the farmers would build one in each area for the children. 1855 Atherton Settlement combined with other farms to become Burton Township; the second largest township, but without a post office so, “HIDDEN.”

Download or read book Easter written by Michael Arditti and published by Arcadia Books. This book was released on 2011-04-01 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the Mardi Gras and Waterstone's Book awards, longlisted for the Costa Novel award 'It's a delight to find a modern novel that takes religion and all the objections to it seriously as a subject: the rockpool of a London parish teems with all kinds of curious life' Philip Pullman 'Michael Arditti writes about Western Christianity, as it is manifest in the present Church of England, with pungency and satirical frankness. His style has Joycean echoes' Muriel Spark A Vicar and his congregation are caught up in a latter-day Passion story that will tear apart their lives. The parish of St Mary-in-the-Vale is preparing for Easter. In his Palm Sunday sermon, the Vicar explains that Christ's crucifixion and redemption are taking place every day. He little suspects that, before the week's out, he and his entire congregation will be caught up in a latter-day Passion story which will tear apart their lives. Michael Arditti's magnificent novel is both a devastating portrait of today's Church of England and an audacious reworking of the central myth of Western culture. Taking the form of a traditional triptych, it is at once intimate and epic, lyrical and analytic. Shocking events unfold against a backdrop of meticulously observed religious services. High Church ritual, evangelical revivalism and the ancestor-worship of the English gentry are all subjected to merciless scrutiny.

Download or read book Whom God Loves written by Vivian Hollis Mayne and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2006-11-16 with total page 661 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a member of the Kimmage Garrison (comprised of exiles from England) WILLE MacNAMEE fought in the General Post Office in the 1916 EASTER RISING. Through a strange quirk of fate he was one of the very few volunteers from that garrison to survive. Meanwhile, in Parnell Street (around the corner from the G.P.O.) while the City of Dublin burned, the widow MARY O'DWYER, grappled with hoards of stockpiling customers in her FAMILY DAIRY. Until shortages and the threatening flames forced its closure. Thankfully the dairy escaped unharmed. And Mary thanked the Good Lord for his blessings which included the non involverment of any of her seven offsprings in the Rising. However, on the day of the surrender two incidents associated with the RISING brought immeasurable sorrow to Mary and her family. Later as a P.O.W. in the Frongoch Camp in Wales, Wille became friendly with Mary's son, Peter. As members of the IRB (The Irish Replican Brotherhood) both men joined Collins' secret 'net work.' Shortly afterwards Peter introduced Willie to his two younger sisters, NANCY and JANE, when they came to visit from Dublin. For Willie and Jane it was love at first sight. During the rest of their stay in Frongoch, Willie and Peter, together with many other nationalists, became immersed in Collins' secret plans to wage guerilla warfare in Ireland after their release, which occurred on the 22nd December. However, Willie's clandestine association with Collins afterwards caused great unhappiness in his romance with Jane. Foremost was the mother's intolerance and prejudice against the renegade republican, Willie, keeping company with her daughter. Eventually Willie had to make a choice.
