Book excerpt: "This book is a history of the field of sociology as it existed from the interwar, wartime, and postwar periods in France and its Empire. This does not refer just to sociologists who did some work in the colonies, or occasionally thought about them in their metropolitan work, but a specific field which was constituted to understand and then govern these colonies. The author argues that the re-founding of French sociology during and after World War II - which spawned the likes of Raymond Aron, Jacques Berque, Georges Balandier, and Pierre Bourdieu - occurred within the context of the re-founding of the French empire. Though there was been much discussion of "decolonizing" sociology in the postwar period, the deep history of sociology's connection to French colonialism and empire has been ignored when, the author argues, it is central. The main driver of the expansion of sociology in this period was colonial developmentalism. Sociologists became favored partners of colonial governments, applying their expertise to an array of "social problems," such as de-tribalization, poverty, labor migration, rapid urbanization and the growth of shantytowns, and the decay of traditional families and religious beliefs, and working on "modernizing" solutions. Many sociologists whose careers began in the overseas colonies formulated concepts and theories that quickly entered metropolitan (and then global) sociology, and their origins were forgotten. Steinmetz examines the ways in colonial sociologists differed from the rest of the discipline -in many ways they represented its most dynamic cutting edge-and how their locations may have affected their intellectual agendas and scholarship. He explores the ways in which these sociologists networked and tracks their major intellectual innovations and influence as a group. He also explores the marginalization faced by both sociologists working in the colonies and those born there, while showing the ways in which they were able to overcome them. The specific challenges of colonial sociology-including some very strongly anticolonial colonial sociologists-shaped sociological theory in ways that are still dominant. The book amounts to a historical sociology of French academia all told-with an emphasis on sociology and other human sciences-as well as a collective biography of many of the major figures, many who are continually read and cited to this day"--

Book excerpt: Questo libro è il risultato di un progetto di ricerca internazionale finanziato e con sede presso l'Università di Roma Tre (coordinato da Stefano Mastandrea). Lo scopo del progetto di ricerca è stato quello di creare un questionario su larga scala per indagare atteggiamenti, motivazioni, tratti di personalità, emozioni e processi di apprendimento in materia di visite museali da parte di giovani adulti. Il gruppo di ricerca era costituito da studiosi di otto diversi Paesi: Austria, Francia, Ungheria, Italia, Nuova Zelanda, Portogallo, Taiwan e Stati Uniti. I partecipanti della ricerca (N = 2.247) erano costituiti da un campione di studenti universitari senza specifica formazione artistica, provenienti da tre diversi Dipartimenti (psicologia, educazione e sociologia). I risultati principali hanno mostrato che circa il 75% del campione totale ha visitato almeno un museo negli ultimi 12 mesi e circa il 40% ha visitato tra 2 e 5 musei. I musei più visitati sono stati quelli di arte moderna. I partecipanti hanno riportato un buon livello di soddisfazione rispetto alle visite condotte. Complessivamente le emozioni prevalenti riferite alle visite erano la curiosità, l'interesse e il piacere; tuttavia, le emozioni variavano a seconda del tipo di museo visitato: godimento estetico per l'arte antica, godimento estetico e interesse per l'arte moderna, divertimento e curiosità per i musei scientifici. Nell’ottobre 2013 è stato organizzato a Roma, dal Dipartimento di Scienze della Formazione e dal Laboratorio di Psicologia Sperimentale dell'Università Roma Tre, un congresso a cui hanno partecipato tutti i partner internazionali del progetto presentando i risultati di ogni singola unità di ricerca. Book excerpt: It is difficult for us today to imagine that equal educational opportunity, with which we are so deeply preoccupied, was at one time considered to be if not an evil at least a futile objective, and that those who held such an opinion were completely insincere and even disinterested. For a vertically stratified society equality of education had to be opposed be cause it would disturb an equilibrium as vital as that of a building. In the Middle Ages only the Church was able to look for new members at the bottom of the social ladder, since ecclesiastical office was not inherited by birth. But efforts in this direction were necessarily very limited, even if only because of the material obstacles to such an aim. Equality of education, as well as any other type of equality could not even be imagined by the aristocracy whose very existence would have been threatened. Its initial indifference was followed by active opposition. When it became possible to formulate the question of the diffusion of education, in the 17th and 18th centuries, the principle itself met with a fundamental objection. The ruling class, idle by its very nature, feared that the workers and especially those on the land would abandon their productive labours, now felt to be degrading, and swell the ranks of the parasites in the cities.
