Download or read book glises et sant dans le Tiers Monde Hier et aujourd hui written by Jean Pirotte and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-05-18 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fifteen papers presented here examine three centuries of close, if sometimes ambiguous, links between Christian mission and medicine. The authors, who include theologians, historians, sociologists, physicians and representatives of major international health-care organisations, address themselves to such questions as: How is one to assess the results of past missionary health-care effort? How are modern-day Christian organisations to cope with the burden of institutions set up in the past? What links should the Churches maintain with official medical organisations? What position should the Churches take on the 'faith v. healing' debate begun by certain religious groups? And how is one to lay the groundwork of a theology of health and healing? The complexity of the issues outlined here can - alas - provide no easy answers.

Download or read book French Theories of Regulation and Conceptions of the International Division of Labour written by Alfredo C. Robles Jr and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-27 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book argues that a satisfactory theory of the international division of labour must come to grips with the problems of economism, functionalism and determinism that have sometimes characterised Marxian approaches to this theme. It assesses the implications of French regulation theories for this central concept of international political economy. It covers not only the Parisian variant, well represented in English through the work of Michel Aglietta and Alain Lipietz, but also the no less important Grenoble school.

Download or read book Transformations in Trade Politics written by Silke Trommer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-01-23 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the evolution and application of participatory trade politics in West Africa and discusses the theoretical implications for political economy and global governance approaches to trade policy-making. The author traces the involvement of a network of West African global justice Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO), local NGO and movement platforms, and trade unions in the negotiations for an Economic Partnership Agreement with the European Union. Building on this empirical analysis, she develops a theoretical framework of trade policy formation that is not limited to conceptualizing trade as a policy field aimed exclusively at regulating exporting and importing activities in the global economy. Instead, she analyzes how material and ideational spheres interact in the way in which communities set the rules that enable them to trade across long distances. Attempting to reconcile demands for inclusivity with current economic policy-making, the author reframes the way in which we theoretically pose questions of who makes trade policy decisions, through which mechanisms and why trade policy-making practices change, or resist change. Transformations in Trade Politics will be of interest to students and scholars of International Political Economy, Global Governance, Social Movement Studies, International Economic Relations, International Trade Relations, African Politics, The Politics of African/International Development, EU politics and EU-African Relations.
Download or read book What is a Fair International Society written by Emmanuelle Tourme Jouannet and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2014-07-18 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today's world is post-colonial and post-Cold War. These twin characteristics explain why international society is also riddled with the two major forms of injustice which Nancy Fraser identified as afflicting national societies. First, the economic and social disparities between states caused outcry in the 1950s when the first steps were taken towards decolonisation. These inequalities, to which a number of emerging states now contribute, are still glaring and still pose the problem of the gap between formal equality and true equality. Second, international society is increasingly confronted with culture- and identity-related claims, stretching the dividing line between equality and difference. The less-favoured states, those that feel stigmatised, but also native peoples, ethnic groups, minorities and women now aspire to both legal recognition of their equal dignity and the protection of their identities and cultures. Some even seek reparation for injustices arising from the past violation of their identities and the confiscation of their property or land. In answer to these two forms of claim, the subjects of international society have come up with two types of remedy encapsulated in legal rules: the law of development and the law of recognition. These two sets of rights are neither wholly autonomous and individualised branches of law nor formalised sets of rules. They are imperfect and have their dark side. Yet they can be seen as the first milestones towards what might become a fairer international society; one that is both equitable (as an answer to socio-economic injustice) and decent (as an answer to cultural injustice). This book explores this evolution in international society, setting it in historical perspective and examining its presuppositions and implications.
Download or read book The Aims and Methods of Postcolonial International Law written by Chin Leng Lim and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2024-09-30 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Criticism of colonial justifications has been familiar since the age of Sepúlveda and Las Casas. Yet today it is said that international law is, and always was, an instrument of colonialism. It is true that the ius gentium and the Law of Nations failed to prevent colonialism and were used in fact to justify colonialism. Still, such failures which occurred over the successive periods of European colonization of non-European peoples did not implicate the whole of international law thought. That is just a modern exaggeration, but rather than repair the international law that we have, for example in our discussions about colonial reparation, some now wish us to reject international law altogether. In seeking to cast present-day criticisms in a proper light, these lectures at the Hague Academy had discussed the more notable literature, including in judgments and arbitral awards, from the time of the classic works that are connected to the history of the subject to the present day. Now presented in pocketbook form the objective is the same; which is to explain the aims and methods of post-colonial criticism, and to reject the view that it is too late for international law.
