Download or read book Formation and Decay of Disinfection By products in the Distribution System written by and published by American Water Works Association. This book was released on 2006 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of this project was to understand the formation and decay of selected DBPs in full-scale distribution systems focusing on the four THMs and the nine HAAs, as well as individual THM and HAA species. Because of its critical nature, NDMA was also included. The project objectives were: evaluate the critical factors that affect THM and HAA behavior in distribution systems; determine the fate and behavior of NDMA in distribution systems; evaluate the effect of pipe material and diameter on the fate of DBPs in distribution systems; examine the effect of storage reservoirs / tanks and booster chlorination stations on THM, HAA and NDMA concentrations; evaluate the changes in DBP concentrations and speciation when a system seasonally switches from chloramines to free chlorine to limit potential nitrification episodes....
Download or read book Sludge Management written by B. Jimenez and published by IWA Publishing (International Water Assoc). This book was released on 2002 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The treatment, management, and application or disposal of sludge is currently a major problem all over the world. However, solutions vary from one region to another and must be based on the technical and economical capacities of each country. Thus this issue reflects the special emphasis put on knowing the characteristics of sludges and their differences according to whether they come from a developed or a developing country, or from one region or another. A broad range of sludge stabilisation techniques were considered, ranging from low-cost and easy-to-operate technologies, to highly technological and costly alternatives, with local circumstances in mind. Sludge minimisation processes focus on solutions that avoid the problems, but it is clear that there will always be sludge generation and thus beneficial reuse should still be encouraged. Land application in developed and developing countries is included to present the perception of this alternative under different scenarios, comparing, for example, the experiences in countries like France and the United States, with those of Brazil and Greece. Similar international comparisons are given of management and regulatory regimes. Alternative processes give a rapid vision of non-conventional options that may constitute an interesting approach to sludge reuse. with the intention of satisfying the needs in different parts of the world. From the high-quality programme of this conference 41 papers have been selected after peer review. They provide an authoritative and wide-ranging survey of the state of research and practice in sludge management that will be an essential source of information of worldwide value.

Book excerpt: The success of the previous Conferences on Energy from Biomass, held in Brighton 1980and Berlin 1982, and the continued interest among European countries, encouraged theCommission of the European Communities to organise the third conference on this areaof energy production. It brought together about 500 experts from many countries thuspresenting an international forum for discussion of the most recent advances in researchand development, manufacture and industrial applications.
Download or read book Solids in Sewers written by Richard M. Ashley and published by IWA Publishing. This book was released on 2004-04-30 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Report presents information on the current state of knowledge of the origins, occurrence, nature and effects of sewer solids for use by engineers, scientists, administrators and water quality planners for the planning, design and operation of sewerage systems. The report addresses both sewer maintenance requirements and environmental protection issues. Increasing environmental standards, coupled with public expectations, have led to stringent water quality standards. In response to this, it has been necessary to develop new methodologies and computer based analytical techniques to model and understand the performance of all aspects of waste water systems. Fundamental to these techniques is the understanding of the way in which sewer solids contribute to the poor performance of wastewater systems and consequential environmental damage. The information presented in this Report about the origins, nature, movement, hydraulic and polluting effects of solids in sewers has enabled strategies and rules to be developed for the management of sewerage systems to minimise the deleterious effects of these solids and associated pollutants. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: G.HAINNAUX Departement Milieu et Activites Agricoles, Centre ORSTOM, 911 Avenue d' Agropolis, B.P. 5045, 34032 Montpellier Cedex , France. Solid state fermentation, popularly abbreviated as SSF, is currently investigated by many groups throughout the world. The study of this technique was largely neglected in the past in European and Western countries and there is now a high demand for SSF, meaning in food, environment, agricultural, phannaceutical and many other biotechnological applications. It gives me satisfaction to note that the importance of this technique was realised at my department way back in 1975 since then, our team has put concentrated efforts on developing this technique. xvii Foreword Advances in Solid State Fermentation Foreword M. PUYGRENIER Agropolis Valorisation, Avenue d' Agropolis, 34394 Montpellier Cedex 5, France. On the name of the Scientific Community, I would like to express the wish that this International Symposium on SSF should be successful. Solid State Fermentation is part of biotechnology research. It consists on seeding solid culture medium with bacteria or fungi (filamentous or higher) and on producing, in this medium (solid components and exudates) metabolites and high value products. In fact, this process is very old. In older industries such the food and agricultural, this technique has been extensively used. An example of this is the production of pork sausages and Roquefort cheese. Pharmaceutical industry could make extensive use of SSF in the production of secondary metabolites of many kinds and development in this direction is soon expected.
