J'ai voulu produire un instrument éducationnel pour que ceux qui vont lire ce livre puissent assimiler ces récits tant par les textes que par les images. Les messages ainsi inculqués pourraient marquer leur vie à jamais. La lecture de bons livres, surtout dans notre société actuelle a la tendance de remplir le vide laissé par l'absence des parents dans la formation tant intellectuelle que civique, culturelle, morale et religieuse des enfants à nos jours. Les salons sociaux « abba » comme on les avait connus dans la société Bantu ont disparu depuis l'incertion des écoles. Les tables à manger, les maisons-cuisines africaines avec des places assises et les lits, les grandes cours des villages où les enfants passaient le temps sous le clair de lune pour dancer ou entendre les récits racontés et entonnés des chants par la grand-mère, étaient des instruments de transmission de valeurs culturelles de la société. Mais aujourd'hui, tout cela à disparu. Nos enfants et grands enfants grandissent sous le guide de la télévision, des médias, et des influences étrangères qui dénaturent totalement notre société africaine. Comme il est impossible de faire un retour aux anciens instruments de transmission de valeurs, utilisons les moyens modernes pour faire une différence positive dans la vie de ceux qui formrnt notre futur tant social que religieux. C'est donc dans ce contexte que j'ai écrit ce livre qui couvre la vie de Jésus et son ministère allant des prophéties de sa venue à la solide implantation de son Eglise sur terre. La Bible est la base de tout que j'ai écrit, mais le plus souvent en mes propres termes afin de faciliter la compréhension.Il y a 29 chapitres illustrés et chacun contient au moins 7 récits. Tous les récits ne sont pas illustrés. Mais j'ai voulu inclure au moins trois à quatre photos dans chaque chapitre. Un autre mérite de ce livre est qu'il est simple au point de donner un sens profond des conceptes fondamentaux de la foi chrétienne sans pour autant utiliser les lourds termes. Un enfant qui a assimilé les connaissances de ce livre aura une bonne compréhension de ce qu'est notre foi en Jésus Christ. Que ce livre soit le bienvenu parmi ceux qui prendront notre relève dans cette société et surtout, ceux qui sont l'Eglise chrétienne de demain en Afrique et dans le monde. Le 23 Mai 2014

Book excerpt: In this compelling study of two seventeenth-century female mystics, Bo Karen Lee examines the writings of Anna Maria van Schurman and Madame Jeanne Guyon, who, despite different religious formations, came to similar conclusions about the experience of God in contemplative prayer. Van Schurman was born into a Dutch Calvinist family and became a superb scriptural commentator before undergoing a dramatic religious conversion and joining the Labadist community, a Pietistic movement. Guyon was a French layperson whose thought would be identified with Quietism—a spiritual path that was looked upon with suspicion both by the French Catholic Church and by Rome. Lee analyzes and compares the themes of self-denial and self-annihilation in the writings of these two mystics. In van Schurman's case, the focus is on the distinction between scholastic knowledge of God and the intima notitia Dei accessible only by radical self-denial. In Guyon's case, it is on the union with God that is accessible only through a painful self-annihilation. For both authors, Lee demonstrates that the desire for enjoyment of God plays an important role as the engine of the soul's progress away from self-centeredness. The appendices offer facing Latin and English translations of two letters by van Schurman and a selection from her Eukleria.

Refusing to Kiss the Slipper re-examines the Reformation in francophone Europe, presenting for the first time the perspective of John Calvin's evangelical enemies and revealing that the French Reformation was more complex and colorful than previously recognized. Michael Bruening brings together a cast of Calvin's opponents from various French-speaking territories to show that opposition to Calvinism was stronger and better organized than has been recognized. He examines individual opponents, such as Pierre Caroli, Jerome Bolsec, Sebastian Castellio, Charles Du Moulin, and Jean Morély, but more importantly, he explores the anti-Calvinist networks that developed around such individuals. Each group had its own origins and agenda, but all agreed that Calvin's claim to absolute religious authority too closely echoed the religious sovereignty of the pope. These oft-neglected opponents refused to offer such obeisance-to kiss the papal slipper-arguing instead for open discussion of controversial doctrines. They believed Calvin's self-appointed leadership undermined the bedrock principle of the Reformation that the faithful be allowed to challenge religious authorities. This book shows that the challenge posed by these groups shaped the way the Calvinists themselves developed their reform strategies. Bruening's work demonstrates that the breadth and strength of the anti-Calvinist networks requires us to abandon the traditional assumption that Huguenots and other francophone Protestants were universally Calvinist.
