Book excerpt: L'industrie de la musique enregistrée a vu son chiffre d'affaires baisser de plus de 60% depuis le début des années 2000. L'examen des relations entre les différents acteurs impliqués dans la constitution d'une « culture acousmatique » depuis la fin du XIXe siècle, l'industrie, les médias, les journalistes et les publics notamment, permet de mettre en évidence qu'alors que l'écoute de musique est de plus en plus largement répandue au sein de la population et qu'elle acquiert une dimension intime, la diffusion est concentrée autour d'un nombre de plus en plus réduit de références, avec pour conséquence un ressentiment grandissant chez les amateurs passionnés. Dans un contexte d'hyperchoix, les nouvelles sorties sont nombreuses à être devenues « anonymes », car non inscrites dans des cercles de sociabilité, ce qui leur donne pourtant toute leur valeur. C'est en mettant à profit les possibilités d'échanges offertes par le net et le numérique, qui n'ont pas été pris au sérieux par l'industrie, que des artistes émergents sont parvenus à créer des liens forts avec des publics passionnés, souvent eux-mêmes artistes ou impliqués dans des micro-réseaux de promotion, qui se sont largement multipliés. On assiste ainsi à l'émergence d'un « marché de l'affectif » qui présente autant de nouvelles potentialités pour les artistes émergents que de risques. Outre que l'importance prise par la promotion / diffusion tend à défavoriser les artistes issus des couches populaires de population, les relations de confiance entre publics et artistes pourraient être mises à mal du fait d'une exploitation par les industries culturelles considérée comme malvenue par les publics passionnés.

Platforms are the object of considerable hype with a growing global presence. Relying on individual contributions coordinated by social media to finance cultural production (and carry out promotional tasks) is a significant shift, especially when supported by morphing public policies, supposedly enhancing cultural diversity and accessibility. The aim of this book is to propose a critical analysis of these phenomena by questioning what follows from decisions to outsource modes of creation and funding to consumers. Drawing on research carried out within the ‘Collab’ programme backed by the French National Research Agency, the book considers how platforms are used to organize cultural labour and/or to control usages, following a logic of suggestion rather than overt injunction. Four key areas are considered: the history of crowdfunding as a system; whose interests crowdfunding may serve; the implications for digital labour and lastly crowdfunding’s interface with globalization and contemporary capitalism. The book concludes with an assessment of claims that crowdfunding can democratize culture.
