Download or read book Pascal s Lettres Provinciales written by Richard Parish and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1989 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first comprehensive study to appear in Engish of the controversial Lettres provinciales, Pascal's major polemical work, undertaken as a defence of Port-Royal and as an attack on the Society of Jesus. The author first analyzes in detail the substance and structure of the letters themselves, casting light in the process on the nature and function of polemic and on Pascal's mastery in the genre. Secondly, he examines the text in the light of other contemporary writing: in discussing the (mainly) Jesuit counter-polemic, he adduces a good deal of material not easily accessible to scholarly investigation, and thereby sets the Provinciales in the context of the broader polemical exchange; then, in exploring the links between the Provinciales and Pascal's Pensées, he demonstrates a closer connection between those two seminal works than has generally been recognized, and in so doing offers some insightinto the problematic relationship between polemics and apologetics. --Book jacket.

Download or read book The People s Revolution of 1789 written by Micah Alpaugh and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2024-09-15 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The People's Revolution of 1789 analyzes the historic events that unleashed a vast panoply of anarchic, destructive, and creative disorders that demolished France's Old Regime and founded a new revolutionary order. It captures the complex and dynamic interplay of uprisings, elections, meetings, and revolutionary moments that helped create modern freedom. The People's Revolution of 1789 is the first book to chronicle the Parisian, provincial, and colonial movements of 1789 together. In doing so, Micah Alpaugh builds from hundreds of local and regional studies and sources on the French Revolution to provide a new interpretation of the powerful contestations that created the modern revolutionary tradition. He explores the multiplicity of movements—anarchistically operating without a common leader and usually in only loose coordination—that gave the revolutionary dynamic its power, without which the legislators' revolution at Versailles would have failed or been severely curtailed. The rapid onslaught of protests across the First Year of Liberty compounded their effects, overpowering authorities' efforts to maintain a degenerating order and forcing the establishment of a more open system. The People's Revolution of 1789 reveals in new ways how the French revolutionaries ended feudalism, established human rights, abolished the police, and instituted new elected governments. By returning emphasis to the people's revolution, we can better understand how world history's most consequential revolution developed, as millions of French people embraced direct action in hopes of fundamental change. Through the movements of millions, the French created the most powerful revolution the world had yet experienced.

Download or read book Volition Rhetoric and Emotion in the Work of Pascal written by Thomas Parker and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-05-13 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study identifies and analyzes a compelling theory and practice of persuasion that integrates the complexity of human desire. It demonstrates how the philosophical component in Pascal's description of the will makes a seamless integration into a vehicle of persuasion and poetics, providing a privileged viewpoint for understanding the author's complete works, arguing that the notion of will is of fundamental importance in Pascal's anthropology as well as in his rhetoric. This avenue of interpretation is both fruitful and difficult, because the word "volonte" means very different things in Pascal and in modern French. Beginning by contextualizing the notion of 'volonte' and explaining its expanded use in the seventeenth-century lexicon, the author then endeavors to show that Pascal borrows an essentially Augustinian paradigm of desire to create a depiction of the will divided against itself, surreptitiously yearning for what its bearer does not want.
