Book Mediterranean Wild Edible Plants

Download or read book Mediterranean Wild Edible Plants written by María de Cortes Sánchez-Mata and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-12 with total page 477 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the result of collaboration between botanists and food chemists, with the purpose of improving the knowledge of the main wild species of traditional use as foods in the Mediterranean area, focus on ethnobotanical aspects, natural production, uses and nutritional aspects. One of the novelties of the book would be the publication of complete food composition tables of more than 40 species, which are not usually included in nutrient databases of foods. Many of the data included comes from the chemical analysis of representative samples of these species and other are compiled from the scientific literature. Since this topic had not been fully studied, this book provides an interesting tool to be used with the purpose of the revalorization of wild food species, preservation of their traditional uses, and also as alternatives to improve the diversity of modern Mediterranean diets.

Book Codex Canadensis and the Writings of Louis Nicolas

Download or read book Codex Canadensis and the Writings of Louis Nicolas written by François-Marc Gagnon and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2011-09-29 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part art, part science, part anthropology, this ambitious project presents an early Canadian perspective on natural history that is as much artistic and fantastical as it is encyclopedic. Edited and introduced by François-Marc Gagnon, The Codex Canadensis and the Writings of Louis Nicolas showcases an intriguing attempt to document the life of the new world - flora, fauna, and aboriginal. The book brings together for the first time the illustrated Codex Canadensis and The Natural History of the New World, following Gagnon's argument that both can be attributed to Louis Nicolas, a French Jesuit priest who travelled throughout Canada between 1664 and 1675. Histoire Naturelle des Indes Occidentales, originally written in classical French, has been put in modern French by Réal Ouellet and translated into English by Nancy Senior. The Natural History presents a pre-Linnaean botany and pre-Darwinian account of living things, including hundreds of species of plants and vivid descriptions of wildlife. It is thoroughly annotated, focusing on the contemporary identification of species, as the result of a pan-Canadian collaboration of experts in fields from linguistics to biology and botany. The Codex Canadensis, currently in the collection of the Gilcrease Museum in Tulsa, Oklahoma, is reproduced in full and provides both a fascinating visual account of wildlife as Nicolas saw it and a rare example of early Canadian art. Gagnon's introduction profiles Louis Nicolas and analyses connections between his work and European examples of natural illustration from the period. The Codex Canadensis and the Writings of Louis Nicolas shows how the wildlife and native inhabitants of the new world were understood and documented by a seventeenth-century European and makes available fundamental documents in the history and visual culture of early North America.

Book Henry Hudson and the Algonquins of New York

Download or read book Henry Hudson and the Algonquins of New York written by Evan T. Pritchard and published by Chicago Review Press. This book was released on 2019-11-26 with total page 495 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The year was 1609, and British explorer Henry Hudson had landed in North America at the bidding of the Dutch East India Company. But Hudson was not the first man to set foot on Manhattan Island. Henry Hudson and the Algonquins of New York chronicles this historic "discovery" with a hereto unknown perspective—that of the people who met Hudson's boat on their shore. Using all available sources, including oral history passed down to today's Algonquins, Evan Pritchard tells a colonization story through several lenses: from Hudson himself, as well as his bodyguard, scribe, and personal Judas, Robert Juet; to the Eastern Algonquin people, who saw his boat as a floating waterfowl, and his arrival as the fulfillment of an ancient prophecy.
