Book Religious Institutes in Western Europe in the 19th and 20th Centuries

Download or read book Religious Institutes in Western Europe in the 19th and 20th Centuries written by Jan de Maeyer and published by Leuven University Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 19th century, religious institutes (orders and congregations) underwent an unprecedented revival. As partners in a large-scale religious modernisation movement, they were welcomed by the Roman Catholic Church in its pursuit of a new role in society (especially in the educational and health-care sectors). At the same time, the Church also deemed it necessary to keep their spectacular growth in check. Until the 1960s religious institutes played an important role both in society at large as well as within the church (for example, at the level of the missions, liturgy and art). Yet, relatively little research has been done on their development either in ecclesiastical or in broad cultural history. As a basis for further study, The European Forum on the History of Religious Insitutes in the 19th and 20th Centuries offers this study of the historiography of religious institutes and of their position in civil and canon law.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Civilizing Habits explores the life stories of three French women missionaries--Philippine Duchesne, Emilie de Vialar, and Anne-Marie Javouhey--who crossed boundaries, both real and imagined, to evangelize far from France's shores. In so doing, they helped France reestablish a global empire after the dislocation of the Revolution and the fall of Napoleon. They also pioneered a new missionary era in which the educational, charity, and health care services provided by women became valuable tools for spreading Catholic influence across the globe. Philippine Duchesne traveled to former French territory in Missouri in 1818 to proselytize among Native Americans. Thwarted by the American policy of removing tribes even further west, she turned her attention to girls' education on the frontier. Emilie de Vialar followed French troops to Algeria after its conquest and opened missions throughout the Mediterranean basin in the mid-nineteenth century. Prevented from direct evangelization, she developed strategies and subterfuges for working among Muslim populations. Anne-Marie Javouhey evangelized among Africans in the French slave colonies, including a utopian settlement in the wilds of French Guiana. She became a rare Catholic proponent of the abolition of slavery and a woman designated a "great man" by the French king. Paradoxically, through embracing religious institutions designed to shield their femininity, these women gained increased authority to travel outside France, challenge church power, and evangelize among non-Christians, all roles more commonly ascribed to male missionaries. Their stories teach us about the life paths open to religious women in the nineteenth century and how both church and state benefitted from their initiative to expand the boundaries of faith and nation.

This book was released on 2021 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In the nineteenth century a new type of mystic emerged in Catholic Europe. While cases of stigmatisation had been reported since the thirteenth century, this era witnessed the development of the 'stigmatic': young women who attracted widespread interest thanks to the appearance of physical stigmata. To understand the popularity of these stigmatics we need to regard them as the 'saints' and religious 'celebrities' of their time. With their 'miraculous' bodies, they fit contemporary popular ideas (if not necessarily those of the Church) of what sanctity was. As knowledge about them spread via modern media and their fame became marketable, they developed into religious 'celebrities'"--

Book From the Salon to the Schoolroom

Download or read book From the Salon to the Schoolroom written by Rebecca Rogers and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2010-11-01 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How a nation educates its children tells us much about the values of its people. From the Salon to the Schoolroom examines the emerging secondary school system for girls in nineteenth-century France and uncovers how that system contributed to the fashioning of the French bourgeois woman. Rebecca Rogers explores the variety of schools--religious and lay--that existed for girls and paints portraits of the women who ran them and the girls who attended them. Drawing upon a wide array of public and private sources--school programs, prescriptive literature, inspection reports, diaries, and letters--she reveals the complexity of the female educational experience as the schoolroom gradually replaced the salon as the site of French women's special source of influence. From the Salon to the Schoolroom also shows how France as part of its civilizing mission transplanted its educational vision to other settings: the colonies in Africa as well as throughout the Western world, including England and the United States. Historians are aware of the widespread ramifications of Jesuit education, but Rogers shows how French education for girls played into the cross-cultural interactions of modern society, producing an image of the Frenchwoman that continues to tantalize and fascinate the Western world today.

Book The Forgotten Contribution of the Teaching Sisters

Download or read book The Forgotten Contribution of the Teaching Sisters written by Bart Hellinckx and published by Leuven University Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "For far too long Catholic teaching sisters have been denied their rightful place in the history of education. It is only during the past twenty-five years that researchers in many countries have begun to reveal the fundamental role played by these women in the schooling of children of both the masses and the elite during the 19th and 20th centuries. This essay provides for the first time a detailed overview of the historiography of the teaching sisters in Western Europe, North America, Latin America and Australasia, surveying scholarship since 1985. It reviews the literature on six major themes: contribution to schooling, teaching orders and schools, educational philosophy, content and practice, life and lived experience of teachers and students, the professionalization of teaching, and changes in the composition of the teaching staff. Very rich in bibliographical references, this book is indispensable for all further research on this significant but underexplored group of women teachers."--Publisher's website.

Book The Golden Arrow The Autobiography and Revelations of Sister Mary of St Peter on Devotion to the Holy Face of Jesus

Download or read book The Golden Arrow The Autobiography and Revelations of Sister Mary of St Peter on Devotion to the Holy Face of Jesus written by Sister Mary Of St Peter and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2019-02-26 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Tours, France, during the 1840's a young Carmelite nun received a series of revelations from Our Lord about a powerful devotion. He wished to be established worldwide--the devotion to His Holy Face. the express purpose of this devotion was to make reparation for the blasphemies and outrages of "Revolutionary men" (the Communists)--through whom God is allowing the world to be chastised for its unbelief--as well as for the blasphemies of the atheists and freethinkers and others, plus, for blasphemy and the profanation of Sundays by Christians. Specifically, this devotion is the divine tool given by God to defeat Communism, but it is also an instrument given to the individual devotee as a seemingly unfailing method of appealing to God in prayer--through adoration of His Holy Face and Name. Our Lord gave Sister Mary a short but powerful prayer called "The Golden Arrow," by which a person can "shoot directly into the Heart of God" to heal the wounds inflicted on It by the malice of sinners. The editor says this devotion brought St. Therese to her great sanctity. Anyone who is searching for a spiritual method for fighting Communism and its programs and/or who is searching for a virtually infallible method of prayer will be delighted with The Golden Arrow.
