Book Francs et Orientaux dans le monde des croisades

Download or read book Francs et Orientaux dans le monde des croisades written by Jean Richard and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-10-28 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This latest volume by Jean Richard is concerned with the evolution of the crusading movement and with the interaction between crusaders and indigenous peoples of the Near East. The articles look at changes in the concept of crusading, means of financing it, and forms of indulgence; at how the adoption of maritime transport created a need to control the sea, and how contacts with the Muslims could lead to peaceful means of resolving conflict and dealing with prisoners. In their lands in the east, the Latins accommodated the feudal structures they brought with them to local conditions, especially in the mountains. Both in this and in the religious sphere compromises were made, and in this co-existence each community preserved its individuality. The final section then considers roles played by eastern Christians in the contacts between Europeans and Mongols.

Book The Mongols and the West

Download or read book The Mongols and the West written by Peter Jackson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-04-09 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mongols and the West provides a comprehensive survey of relations between the Catholic West and the Mongol Empire from the first appearance of Chinggis (Genghis) Khan’s armies on Europe’s horizons in 1221 to the battle of Tannenberg in 1410. This book has been designed to provide a synthesis of previous scholarship on relations between the Mongols and the Catholic world as well as to offer new approaches and conclusions on the subject. It considers the tension between Western hopes of the Mongols as allies against growing Muslim powers and the Mongols’ position as conquerors with their own agenda, and evaluates the impact of Mongol-Western contacts on the West’s expanding knowledge of the world. This second edition takes into account the wealth of scholarly literature that has emerged in the years since the previous edition and contains significantly extended chapters on trade and mission. It charts the course of military confrontation and diplomatic relations between the Mongols and the West, and re-examines the commercial opportunities offered to Western merchants by Mongol rule and the failure of Catholic missionaries to convert the Mongols to Christianity. Fully revised and containing a range of maps, genealogical tables and both European and non-European sources throughout, The Mongols and the West is ideal for students of medieval European history and the crusades.

Book The Fourth Crusade Event Aftermath and Perceptions

Download or read book The Fourth Crusade Event Aftermath and Perceptions written by Thomas F. Madden and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fourth Crusade (1201-1204), launched to restore Jerusalem to Christian control, veered widely off course, finally landing at Constantinople which it conquered and sacked. The effects of the crusade were far-reaching during the Middle Ages and remain powerful even today, which explains the continued vibrancy of its historiography. This volume, based on studies presented at the Sixth Conference of the Society for the Study of the Crusades and the Latin East in Istanbul, Turkey in 2004, represents some of the best new research on this fascinating event. With the "Diversion Question" of the past centuries now largely settled, these studies focus on three aspects of current scholarship: evaluations of the event itself, investigations into the aftermath of the conquest of Constantinople in 1204, and analyses of the evolving perceptions and memories of the event in Europe and the Middle East. Together these essays help to place the Fourth Crusade within the larger context of medieval Mediterranean history as well as larger issues such as agency, accommodation, and memory that inform new aspects of modern historiography.

Book excerpt: The Battle of the Horns of Hattin (4th July, 1187), at which Saladin's armies triumphed over those of the Crusaders, entailed the downfall of the Frankish Kingdom of Jerusalem. This collection of papers results from a conference held in commemoration of the eighth centennial of this crucial battle. Eight of the papers deal with the battle itself or its immediate aftermath; eight others examine ideological, social and military aspects of crusading; and a further eight discuss the history of the Frankish Kingdom and its art and architecture. The volume concludes with a transcript of a 1984 symposium on Joshua Prawer's thesis that this kingdom constituted the first European colonial society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In scope, this book matches The History of Cartography, vol. 1 (1987) edited by Brian Harley and David Woodward.
