Cette lecture ne perçoit qu'une partie du problème. Elle ignore en effet une autre révolution silencieuse actuellement à l'oeuvre : la recherche par les individus de nouveaux rapports au travail. De plus en plus d'hommes et de femmes souhaitent gagner en autonomie, se singulariser, valoriser leur réputation, se réaliser dans ce qu'ils font. Le numérique leur fournit la possibilité de rapprocher leur travail et leurs passions, de mobiliser leurs ressources personnelles pour inventer des formes d'activités à travers lesquelles ils puissent se définir. En analysant les tentatives qui se font jour de travailler autrement, cet ouvrage montre comment se substitue à la longue tradition de l'autre travail, anciennement confiné dans l'espace domestique ou celui du voisinage, un travail ouvert, court-circuitant l'organisation des professions et associant l'économie collaborative marchande à l'économie du partage non marchande. Si ces utopies pratiques nécessitent de repenser le compromis social sur des bases renouvelées pour garantir à tous les mêmes droits, les voies d'émancipation qu'elles inspirent redéfinissent entièrement la question du travail : l'enjeu n'est plus désormais de s'en libérer, mais de le libérer. Patrice Flichy est professeur émérite de sociologie à l'université de Paris Est-Marne-la-Vallée. Il a notamment publié L'Imaginaire d'Internet (La Découverte, 2001) et Le Sacre de l'amateur (La république des idées/Seuil, 2010). Il dirige la revue Réseaux.

Platforms are the object of considerable hype with a growing global presence. Relying on individual contributions coordinated by social media to finance cultural production (and carry out promotional tasks) is a significant shift, especially when supported by morphing public policies, supposedly enhancing cultural diversity and accessibility. The aim of this book is to propose a critical analysis of these phenomena by questioning what follows from decisions to outsource modes of creation and funding to consumers. Drawing on research carried out within the ‘Collab’ programme backed by the French National Research Agency, the book considers how platforms are used to organize cultural labour and/or to control usages, following a logic of suggestion rather than overt injunction. Four key areas are considered: the history of crowdfunding as a system; whose interests crowdfunding may serve; the implications for digital labour and lastly crowdfunding’s interface with globalization and contemporary capitalism. The book concludes with an assessment of claims that crowdfunding can democratize culture.

Ultimately, the collective findings demonstrate how commodification pervades even the most mundane social activities. In The Internet Imaginaire, sociologist Patrice Flichy examines the collective vision that shaped the emergence of the Internet—the social imagination that envisioned a technological utopia in the birth of a new technology. By examining in detail the discourses surrounding the development of the Internet in the United States in the 1990s (and considering them an integral part of that development), Flichy shows how an entire society began a new technological era. The metaphorical "information superhighway" became a technical utopia that informed a technological program. The Internet imaginaire, Flichy argues, led software designers, businesses, politicians, and individuals to adopt this one technology instead of another. Flichy draws on writings by experts—paying particular attention to the gurus of Wired magazine, but also citing articles in Time, Newsweek, and Business Week—from 1991 to 1995. He describes two main domains of the technical imaginaire: the utopias (and ideologies) associated with the development of technical devices; and the depictions of an imaginary digital society. He analyzes the founding myths of cyberculture—the representations of technical systems expressing the dreams and experiments of designers and promoters that developed around information highways, the Internet, Bulletin Board systems, and virtual reality. And he offers a treatise on "the virtual society imaginaire," discussing visionaries from Teilhard de Chardin to William Gibson, the body and the virtual, cyberdemocracy and the end of politics, and the new economy of the immaterial.
