Book Les clercs face au contexte social et culturel actuel

Download or read book Les clercs face au contexte social et culturel actuel written by Luc Mazola and published by Editions du Panthéon. This book was released on 2024-06-18 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Shattering Tradition written by Walter Dostal and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2005-04-22 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few deny that in the Muslim world religion and law are intimately linked. However, local legal realities mean that Islamic law is often pushed out of the picture by customary law, which is usually tribal, and by state law. Shattering Tradition concentrates on customary law, which is the least investigated of the three, and considers the ruptures and potential for conflict in Muslim law as well as the continuities and interactions. Shattering Tradition is vital reading for all those interested in the social anthropology of the Middle East and the wider study of Islamic law.

Book excerpt: The definitive history of the infamous scandal that shook a nation and stunned the world In 1894, Alfred Dreyfus, a Jewish officer in the French army, was wrongfully convicted of being a spy for Germany and imprisoned on Devil's Island. Over the following years, attempts to correct this injustice tore France apart, inflicting wounds on the society which have never fully healed. But how did a fairly obscure miscarriage of justice come to break up families in bitterness, set off anti-Semitic riots across the French empire, and nearly trigger a coup d'état? How did a violently reactionary, obscurantist attitude become so powerful in a country that saw itself as the home of enlightenment? Why did the battle over a junior army officer occupy the foremost writers and philosophers of the age, from Émile Zola to Marcel Proust, Émile Durkheim, and many others? What drove the anti-Dreyfusards to persist in their efforts even after it became clear that much of the prosecution's evidence was faked? Drawing upon thousands of previously unread and unconsidered sources, prizewinning historian Ruth Harris goes beyond the conventional narrative of truth loving democrats uniting against proto-fascists. Instead, she offers the first in-depth history of both sides in the Affair, showing how complex interlocking influences—tensions within the military, the clashing demands of justice and nationalism, and a tangled web of friendships and family connections—shaped both the coalition working to free Dreyfus and the formidable alliances seeking to protect the reputation of the army that had convicted him. Sweeping and engaging, Dreyfus offers a new understanding of one of the most contested and significant moments in modern history.

Book Investigating Translation

Download or read book Investigating Translation written by Allison Beeby and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2000-12-08 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together a selection of papers presented at an international conference on Translation Studies in Barcelona in 1998. The papers illustrate four areas that are of particular interest in translation research today in Europe, Asia and Latin America. The purpose of the first section, ‘Investigating Translation Paradigms’, is to reach a critical revision of existing paradigms and to develop new ones in approaching the translated text. The second section, ‘Investigating the Translation Process’, focuses on the skills, knowledge and strategies that make up translation competence. The third section, ‘Investigating Translation and Ideology’ addresses not only the ‘invisible’ influence of ideologies on the translator, but also the role of translators in transmitting ideology. The fourth section, ‘Investigating Translation Receivers’ envisages translators as communicators caught between the opposing trends of localisation and globalisation. This tension can be seen in the selection of the papers, some of which reflect on research carried out in recently established translation centres in Spain, while others discuss the latest work of scholars from long established centres in other countries.
