Book The Saga of King Hrolf Kraki

Download or read book The Saga of King Hrolf Kraki written by Jesse Byock and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2005-06-30 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Composed in medieval Iceland, Hrolf's Saga is one of the greatest of all mythic-legendary sagas, relating half-fantastical events that were said to have occurred in fifth-century Denmark. It tells of the exploits of King Hrolf and of his famous champions, including Bodvar Bjarki, the 'bear-warrior': a powerful figure whose might and bear-like nature are inspired by the same legendary heritage as Beowulf. Depicting a world of wizards, sorceresses and 'berserker' fighters - originally members of a cult of Odin - this is a compelling tale of ancient magic. A work of timeless power and beauty, it offers both a treasury of Icelandic prose and a masterful gathering of epic, cultic memory, traditional folk tale and myths from the Viking age and far earlier.

Book The Poetic Edda

Download or read book The Poetic Edda written by Paul Acker and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-02-08 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique collection of essays applies significant critical approaches to the mythological poetry of the Poetic Edda, a principal source for Old Norse cosmography and the legends of Odin, Loki, and Thor. The volume also provides very useful introductions that sketch the critical history of the Eddas. By applying new theoretical approaches (feminist, structuralist, post-structuralist) to each of the major poems, this book yields a variety of powerful and convincing readings. Contributors to the collection are both young scholars and senior figures in the discipline, and are of varying nationalities (American, British, Australian, Scandinavian, and Icelandic), thus ensuring a range of interpretations from different corners of the scholarly community. The new translations included here make available for the first time to English speaking students the intriguing methodologies that are currently developing in Scandinavia. An essential collection of scholarship for any Old Norse course, The Poetic Edda will also be of interest to scholars of Indo-European myth, as well as those who study the theory of myth.

Book Chaucer s Decameron and the Origin of the Canterbury Tales

Download or read book Chaucer s Decameron and the Origin of the Canterbury Tales written by Frederick M. Biggs and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2017 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A major and original contribution to the debate as to Chaucer's use and knowledge of Boccaccio, finding a new source for the "Shipman's Tale". A possible direct link between the two greatest literary collections of the fourteenth century, Boccaccio's Decameron and Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, has long tantalized readers because these works share many stories, which are, moreover, placed in similar frames. And yet, although he identified many of his sources, Chaucer never mentioned Boccaccio; indeed when he retold the Decameron's final novella, his pilgrim, the Clerk, states that it was written by Petrarch. For these reasons, most scholars now believe that while Chaucer might have heard parts of the earlier collection when he was in Italy, he did not have it at hand as he wrote. This volumeaims to change our understanding of this question. It analyses the relationship between the "Shipman's Tale", originally written for the Wife of Bath, and Decameron 8.10, not seen before as a possible source. The book alsoargues that more important than the narratives that Chaucer borrowed is the literary technique that he learned from Boccaccio - to make tales from ideas. This technique, moreover, links the "Shipman's Tale" to the "Miller's Tale"and the new "Wife of Bath's Tale". Although at its core a hermeneutic argument, this book also delves into such important areas as alchemy, domestic space, economic history, folklore, Irish/English politics, manuscripts, and misogyny. FREDERICK M. BIGGS is Professor of English at the University of Connecticut.

Download or read book Les migrations internationales et le d veloppement written by Serge Feld and published by Editions L'Harmattan. This book was released on 2019-04-02 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book LA FIN DE L TUDIANT TRANGER

Download or read book LA FIN DE L TUDIANT TRANGER written by Serge Slama and published by Editions L'Harmattan. This book was released on 1999-11-01 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Migrants des Suds written by Collectif and published by IRD Éditions. This book was released on 2013-12-09 with total page 509 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

« Copyright Electre »
