Download or read book Parenting Internet Kids Domesticating Technologies written by Fiona Joy Green and published by Demeter Press. This book was released on 2022-07-07 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parenting/Internet/Kids, with three key terms slashed together, conveys the idea that the practice of parenting may extend both to the Internet and to our children— to the extent that both require attention, care, and forms of regulation, and, in turn, provide support and enjoyment. While the triadic title is somewhat playful, it also strikes a serious note and introduces layered possibilities: we are not simply raising children who have grown up in the internet age, but also Domesticating Technologies by "managing" the computer (relatively young in age, too, having established itself in homes in the 1980s). Including perspectives from scholars and parents living in Australia, Canada, India, Japan, the UK, and the USA, the collection examines how the intimate presence of computer technology in our homes and on our bodies affects not only mothers and parenting, but family life more broadly.

Download or read book Maternity Services and Policy in an International Context written by Patricia Kennedy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-01-09 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first comprehensive international overview of maternity services. Drawing on concepts of risk and social citizenship, it explores the relationship between welfare regimes and health policy by comparing and contrasting provision for childbearing women. Each substantive chapter focuses on a different country, presenting detailed contextual information on health care provision, maternity interventions and birth outcomes there. They discuss key issues such as birth rates and fertility patterns, the role of patient choice, attitudes to place of birth and maternity entitlements among others, and the countries covered represent diverse welfare regimes, including Ireland, Scotland, Sweden, the Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. An extended introduction and a conclusion draw the book together and place it in the context of the literature on comparative welfare regimes. It is an important reference for students and academics interested in comparative social policy, health services research, and maternity services and policies.

Download or read book Negotiated Breastfeeding written by Caroline Chautems and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-10-18 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on an ethnography of postpartum consultations by independent midwives in Switzerland, this book produces unique insights into home-birth parents’ breastfeeding journey from the first hours after birth to weaning. Considered the "natural" continuity of childbirth without intervention, breastfeeding is a fundamental component of the holistic, continuous and individualised care independent midwives provide as they engage with parents in a shared construction of meaning around breastfeeding. This book offers new perspectives on the conceptualisation of breastfeeding as a shared process. Parents, in collaboration with their midwife and baby, are jointly constructing "negotiated breastfeeding". As the child grows and develops, questions arise regarding the management of risks, the construction of the lactating body and the body work required, and the perception of breastfeeding as a means of communication with the child, consistent with a "child-centred" approach to parenting. Fostering a reflection on the contrasts and similarities between the marginal model of holistic care and the dominant biomedical model, this book sheds light on issues of a broader scope: the relationship to health risks and health promotion, gender inequalities regarding parental roles and responsibilities, the concept of the child as a "project", and the consequential "intensification" of parenthood. The book also explores transversal themes by outlining how reproduction and parenting are undertaken in Switzerland, framed by the local cultural, political and economic context, including the gender system and resulting power relationships.
Download or read book Le sauvetage des enfants juifs pendant l Occupation dans les maisons de l OSE 1938 1945 written by Katy Hazan and published by Somogy éditions d'art. This book was released on 2008 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maps the activities of the OSE, especially its establishment of children's homes in France, between 1938-45. Its history sheds light on the relentless progress of Nazi persecution throughout France. Month by month, year by year, from Montmorency to the Creuse and the Italian occupation zone, the homes changed their locations and status. Argues that the successful rescue of thousands of Jewish children during the Shoah was the result of the OSE's decision to open children's homes already in 1938 for refugee children from Germany and Austria. The OSE was then prompt in responding to the political situation and, from 1940 on, opened more than ten homes in the South of France. It removed many children from French internment camps between 1941-42, but when OSE leaders realized that the children were in danger, they changed tactics. In 1943 the assocation went underground, closing its children's homes and providing a network of hiding places for the children. Concludes that, over the years, thousands of children passed through OSE homes, but these represented only one stage in the overall rescue strategy of the welfare organization.
