This book was released on 2024-10-01 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Suicide is a multifaceted phenomenon, with numerous contributing and facilitating factors and variables. Despite motherhood serving as a potential protective factor against suicidal tendencies, a notable prevalence of suicidality persists among pregnant and postpartum women, making suicide a leading cause of death among women with postpartum depression (PDD). Furthermore, numerous women experience emotional challenges during pregnancy, which often persist into the postpartum phase, thus making them also susceptible to depression and suicidality. This Research Topic is dedicated to studies exploring various approaches to suicidal behavior, depression as well as of non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI)among pregnant and postpartum women. The purpose of this Research Topic is to elucidate comprehensive analyses of extant knowledge and empirical data about models, theories, and specific dimensions and variables that may help us increase the understanding of suicidal phenomena among perinatal women (pregnant and postpartum). The specific goal is to identify characteristics that may be used to develop prevention and intervention methods among this at-risk population.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This multidisciplinary collection explores three key concepts underpinning psychiatry—explanation, phenomenology, and nosology—and their continuing relevance in an age of neuroimaging and genetic analysis. This book opens with Dr. Kenneth S. Kendler’s introduction to the philosophical grounding of psychiatric practice. Chapters in the first section of the book then address the concept of explanation, from the difficulties in describing complex behavior to the categorization of psychological and biological causality. In the second section, contributors discuss experience, including the complex and vexing issue of how self-agency and free will affect mental health. The third and final section examines the organizational difficulties in psychiatric nosology and the instability of the existing diagnostic system. Each chapter includes both an introduction by the editors and a concluding comment by another of the book’s contributors. Book Cognitive Psychodynamics as an Integrative Framework in Counselling Psychology and Psychotherapy

Download or read book Cognitive Psychodynamics as an Integrative Framework in Counselling Psychology and Psychotherapy written by Tony Ward and published by Palgrave Macmillan. This book was released on 2019-09-02 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book proposes a novel method of combining the current approaches to counselling and psychotherapy into one coherent framework. The authors argue that the cognitive behavioural tradition (largely focused on thought patterns) and the psychodynamic approach (centred on the client’s experience and relationships), can be successfully integrated with insights from cognitive neuroscience, to form a fruitful synthesis. In doing so they provide a perspective that will enable practitioners to more fully appreciate each client’s unique inner world, based on their individual history and environment. The authors point towards the brain’s innate ability to understand and learn from experience so as to direct the growth of that inner world. This book elaborates a method of tapping into this innate growth potential, so as to help clients move forward when they have become trapped in non-productive patterns or mental stalemates. It will provide fresh insights and a valuable resource for counselling psychologists, counsellors and psychotherapists, as well as for academics and students in these fields.

Book Cultural Consultation

    Book Details:
  • Author : Laurence J. Kirmayer
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2013-08-15
  • ISBN : 1461476151
  • Pages : 365 pages

Download or read book Cultural Consultation written by Laurence J. Kirmayer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-08-15 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on a recently completed project of cultural consultation in Montreal, Cultural Consultation presents a model of multicultural and applicable health care. This model used clinicians and consultants to provide in-depth assessment, treatment planning, and limited interventions in consultation with frontline primary care and mental health practitioners working with immigrants, refugees, and members of indigenous and ethnocultural communities. Evaluation of the service has demonstrated that focused interventions by consultants familiar with patients’ cultural backgrounds could improve the relationship between the patient and the primary clinician. This volume presents models for intercultural work in psychiatry and psychology in primary care, general hospital and specialty mental health settings. The editors highlight crucial topics such as: - Discussing the social context of intercultural mental health care, conceptual models of the role of culture in psychopathology and healing, and the development of a cultural consultation service and a specialized cultural psychiatric service - Examining the process of intercultural work more closely with particular emphasis oto strategies of consultation, the identity of the clinician, the ways in which gender and culture position the clinician, and interaction of the consultant with family systems and larger institutions - Highlighting special situations that may place specific demands on the clinician: working with refugees and survivors of torture or political violence, with separated families, and with patients with psychotic episodes This book is of valuable use to mental health practitioners who are working in multidisciplinary settings who seek to understand cultural difference in complex cases. Psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, nurse practitioners, primary care providers and trainees in these disciplines will make thorough use of the material covered in this text.
