C'est sans doute que les Picards ont su rester fidèles, plus que d'autres, à la pratique de ces différents jeux de balle et ballon français traditionnels, faisant ainsi de la Picardie la terre d'élection de ces jeux « longs » dérivant de la sphéristique des Grecs. « Les jeux de balle et ballon picards » a été publié, pour la première fois, en 1981. Depuis, la pratique de ces jeux a lentement continué à décliner. La méconnaissance du public, et le désintérêt des médias vis-à-vis de ces sports, en sont sûrement les causes principales. Cependant, il est tout à fait remarquable de constater que les règles des jeux de paume ou assimilés, transmises oralement jusqu'à la fin du siècle dernier, sont encore appliquées dans la plupart des jeux traditionnels existant de nos jours. Cette pérennité s'explique, avant tout, par leur degré de perfection qu'aucun autre sport de balle ou de ballon n'a encore jamais atteint. Marcel Lazure, qui a actualisé le texte de la première édition, met à la disposition du public l'essentiel de ce qui constitue une part du patrimoine sportif picard. Il met enfin l'accent sur la nécessité de sauver ces jeux de balle et ballon, sports authentiques, avant qu'ils ne disparaissent complètement.
