Book excerpt: The respiratory tract is a frequent target of infections caused by a wide range of organisms. The book provides reader-friendly information on aspects of pulmonary infections, including comprehensive accounts of bacterial and viral diseases, therapeutic approaches, molecular and classical culture-related techniques of diagnosis and explaining the basic cell biological mechanism. The role of oxidative stress, both helpful in fighting invading pathogens and detrimental in yielding to infection is detailed as it is often undervalued and needs focus. The chapters encompass latest developments and applications in bacteriology and virology, preventive and therapeutic tips, and raise attention to implementation of proper antibiotic policies by medical institutions to decrease resistance to antimicrobials. The perennial problem of low influenza vaccination coverage rate is rationalized. The volume will be of interest to both clinicians and biomedical researchers engaged in this exciting field.

Book Principles and Practice of Disinfection Preservation and Sterilisation

Download or read book Principles and Practice of Disinfection Preservation and Sterilisation written by Allan Denver Russell and published by Blackwell Publishing. This book was released on 1999-02-04 with total page 826 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The impact of micro-organisms on the human world is enormous: they pose a threat to human health in many settings such as food manufacturing, drug laboratories, hospitals and swimming pools, and are also responsible for damage to a wide variety of manufactured products including paper, textiles, wood, leather, fuel, lubricants, cosmetics and construction materials. This book explains the basic scientific principle involved in disinfection, preservation and sterilisation and describes in detail how they are applied in practice. As such, it is an invaluable reference for all those involved in the fight against micro-organisms, whether in hospitals, catering, manufacturing industry, food and recreation industry, or public services. Since the publication of the second edition, there has been a great deal of interest in the field of virucidal agents, particularly in hospitals. As a result, Chapter 6 has been enlarged and updated to reflect this keen interest.

  • Author : Kuan-Yeow Show
  • Publisher : Elsevier Inc. Chapters
  • Release : 2013-06-11
  • ISBN : 0128083638
  • Pages : 39 pages

Download or read book Biohydrogen written by Kuan-Yeow Show and published by Elsevier Inc. Chapters. This book was released on 2013-06-11 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In combating global warming and other environmental issues over the use of fossil fuels, extensive research has been focusing on developing hydrogen production from biological processes. Biohydrogen is considered a promising future biofuel because of its intrinsic clean and high-energy content properties and the way it is produced. In addition to being produced through environmentally friendly biological means, its conversion to energy yields only pure water, which is an ideal energy carrier in reducing greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuel combustion. Unlike other well-developed biofuels such as bioethanol and biodiesel, biohydrogen production is still in the early stage of development. A variety of technologies are being developed for biohydrogen production. This chapter presents a review of the state-of-the-art and perspectives of bioprocess design for biohydrogen production research in the context of pathways, microorganisms, metabolic flux analysis, process design, and reactor system. Challenges and prospects of biohydrogen production are also outlined.
