Comme Luc, Matthieu s efforce d inscrire Jesus dans un cadre historique, mais sa filiation est tres differente de celle du troisieme evangeliste. Et leur effort genealogique aboutit a une impasse puisque, comme chacun sait, Joseph n est pas le pere - selon la chair - de Jesus ! L enfance de Jesus evoquee par Matthieu est egalement tres differente du recit de Luc ! Certains exegetes pensent que plusieurs chapitres ou versets ont ete rediges plus tardivement que les annees 80-90, comme les deux premiers chapitres de la naissance du Christ, ou encore la reconnaissance de Pierre comme chef de l eglise (Matthieu 16, 18). En effet, c est le seul verset ou il est fait mention d une nouvelle eglise, passage dont la tournure a tout lieu d une demonstration theologique, dont le but est de toute evidence la reconnaissance absolue de sa legitimite. Aucun autre evangeliste ne fait mention de cette nouvelle eglise ! Quant a la sequence finale des adieux du Christ, qui a lieu en Galilee chez Matthieu et non en Judee comme chez Luc et Marc, c est une disparition sans aucune Ascension (comme pour Jean) et non avec, comme selon Luc et Marc Pour approfondir, cf.: www.evangileincroyable.fr"

The body of mortal creatures, the body politic, the body of letters and of laws, the “mystical body of Christ”—all these (and others) are incorporated in the word Corpus, the title and topic of Jean-Luc Nancy’s masterwork. Corpus is a work of literary force at once phenomenological, sociological, theological, and philosophical in its multiple orientations and approaches. In thirty-six brief sections, Nancy offers us at once an encyclopedia and a polemical program—reviewing classical takes on the “corpus” from Plato, Aristotle, and Saint Paul to Descartes, Hegel, Husserl, and Freud, while demonstrating that the mutations (technological, biological, and political) of our own culture have given rise to the need for a new understanding of the body. He not only tells the story of this cultural change but also explores the promise and responsibilities that such a new understanding entails. The long-awaited English translation is a bold, bravura rendering. To the title essay are added five closely related recent pieces—including a commentary by Antonia Birnbaum—dedicated in large part to the legacy of the “mind-body problem” formulated by Descartes and the challenge it poses to rethinking the ancient problems of the corpus. The last and most poignant of these essays is “The Intruder,” Nancy’s philosophical meditation on his heart transplant. The book also serves as the opening move in Nancy’s larger project called “The deconstruction of Christianity.”

During his illustrious career, Professor Quispel was also visiting Professor at Harvard University in 1964/65, and visiting Professor at the Catholic University of Leuven from 1969 until 1974. The fifty essays collected in this volume testify to most of the prominent themes from Professor Quispel’s scholarly career: the writings of the Nag Hammadi library in general and the Gospel of Thomas in particular; Tatian’s Diatessaron and its influences; the Hermetica; Mani and Manichaeism; the Jewish origins of Gnosticism; and Gnosis and the future of Christianity.
