A partir de différents échantillons de firmes d'habillement ou d'électronique, sont examines l'avantage compétitif et les facteurs clés de succès pour les fabrications délocalisées, le processus de décision d'implantation et les variables environnementales considérées, le contrôle et l'organisation de la production des unités. Conformément à l'hypothèse traditionnelle, la réduction du coût de production apparait comme le principal objectif. Dans la majorité des entreprises, cet avantage compétitif renvoie à un comportement réactif. Néanmoins, des caractéristiques d'une stratégie proactive sont perceptibles dans quelques cas.
