Book Les dessins de Champignons de Claude Aubriet

Download or read book Les dessins de Champignons de Claude Aubriet written by Xavier Carteret and published by Publications scientifiques du Muséum. This book was released on 2019-10-24 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Les dessins de champignons de Claude Aubriet written by Xavier Carteret and published by French National Museum Natural History. This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1730, noted painter and miniaturist Claude Aubriet created ninety-seven color plates that depicted a wide-range of mushrooms. Because of their high quality, the paintings were used by numerous scientists from the period, including Carl Linnaeus. In this book, Xavier Carteret and Aline Hamonou-Mahieu reproduce Aubriet's stunning images, describing the rarity of color illustrations of mushrooms before the end of the eighteenth century. They reveal that these drawings reflected the period's lack of understanding of fungi, when the structure, reproduction, and general existence of mushrooms remained a mystery. A welcome volume for mycologists and for fans of Aubriet, this book underlines the decisive role scientific illustration has played throughout history.

Book The Quarrel over Swammerdam s Posthumous Works

Download or read book The Quarrel over Swammerdam s Posthumous Works written by Andrea Strazzoni and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-08-28 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Quarrel over Swammerdam’s Posthumous Works reconstructs the vicissitudes of Johannes Swammerdam’s Biblia naturae, a pivotal collection of writings in the history of science. Bequeathed to the polymath Melchisédech Thévenot, the manuscripts and drawings of the treatises constituting this collection were instead kept by the editor Hermann Wingendorp after Swammerdam’s death (1680), triggering a quarrel over their publication. By analysing Swammerdam’s scientific legacy and by offering an edition of the correspondence testifying to the efforts towards such publication, this book sheds light on the editorial history and intellectual context of Swammerdam’s Biblia. This reveals not only an intricate plot of authorized and unauthorized attempts to publish it, but also an exchange of scientific texts and instruments in the late seventeenth century.

Book The drawings of Antoine Nicolas Duchesne for his Natural History of the Gourds

Download or read book The drawings of Antoine Nicolas Duchesne for his Natural History of the Gourds written by Harry S. Paris and published by Publications scientifiques du Muséum. This book was released on 2019-10-24 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the first time, this book makes available to a wide readership, not only to an educated audience, high-resolution reproductions of all the 258 paintings of gourds of the genus Cucurbita, figuring about a hundred cultivars, kept at the Bibliothèque centrale of the Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle, made in the 18th century by the talentuous Antoine Nicolas Duchesne, of the Royal Garden in Versailles, a forerunner of genetics and evolution. This book by Dr. Harry Paris, a leading expert of Cucurbitaceae, is written both in English and French and is aimed at scientists (e.g., botanists, geneticists, agronomists, horticulturists, science historians) as well as more general readers including gardeners, above all those very numerous fond of cultivated plants, particularly of Cucurbitaceae. Its large format (320 x 440 mm), the diversity and magnificence of its plates and the beauty of its presentation will also attract bibliophiles. This volume is not only the first publication to contain Duchesne’s naming and classification of the three economically most important species of Cucurbita, it also contains Duchesne’s summary of his investigations with this genus. The plates are accompanied by reprinting of appropriate abstracts from Duchesne’s Essai sur l’histoire naturelle des courges together with, by Harry Paris, commentaries on the illustrations with an analysis of existing published and unpublished documents concerning these plates. As for his work on strawberries, here once again is stressed the unfailing tenaciousness and extraordinary sense of observation of Antoine Nicolas Duchesne coupled with quite original and premonitory evolutionary ideas.

Book Charles Plumier 1646 1704 and His Drawings of French and Caribbean Fishes

Download or read book Charles Plumier 1646 1704 and His Drawings of French and Caribbean Fishes written by Theodore Wells Pietsch and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book The Illustrated Herbal

Download or read book The Illustrated Herbal written by Wilfrid Blunt and published by Thames & Hudson. This book was released on 1994 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This beautiful and original book, fully illustrated from some of the rarest sources, is an account by two leading authorities of the creation and decoration of Europe's most charming herbals. The illustrations, many in splendid color, are taken from manuscripts and books chronicling human curiosity about the medicinal properties of plants, and making an unconscious record, through the strange (sometimes ludicrous) customs and procedures they describe, of life in past times.

Book Diversity and Function in Mangrove Ecosystems

Download or read book Diversity and Function in Mangrove Ecosystems written by Richard Standiford and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mangroves are salt-adapted plants that are found along many of the world's tropical and sub-tropical coastlines. Regrettably, these plants are being lost due to over-exploitation, pollution, conversion to agriculture and aquaculture and other causes. This is having important consequences for local human populations that traditionally rely on this resource, and is upsetting the fine balance needed to maintain this highly productive ecosystem. This text brings together some papers from two recent international symposia on the mangrove ecosystem. It provides an outline of future directions in mangrove research considered to be urgent by prominent mangrove scientists. Contributions include aspects of population differentiation in mangrove species that have been very little studied so far, ecological function, and restoration and management of the mangrove ecosystem. This book is intended for scientists actively working in the areas of mangrove ecology and management.

Book Human Cultures through the Scientific Lens

Download or read book Human Cultures through the Scientific Lens written by Pascal Boyer and published by Open Book Publishers. This book was released on 2021-07-09 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together a collection of seven articles previously published by the author, with a new introduction reframing the articles in the context of past and present questions in anthropology, psychology and human evolution. It promotes the perspective of ‘integrated’ social science, in which social science questions are addressed in a deliberately eclectic manner, combining results and models from evolutionary biology, experimental psychology, economics, anthropology and history. It thus constitutes a welcome contribution to a gradually emerging approach to social science based on E. O. Wilson’s concept of ‘consilience’. Human Cultures through the Scientific Lens spans a wide range of topics, from an examination of ritual behaviour, integrating neuro-science, ethology and anthropology to explain why humans engage in ritual actions (both cultural and individual), to the motivation of conflicts between groups. As such, the collection gives readers a comprehensive and accessible introduction to the applications of an evolutionary paradigm in the social sciences. This volume will be a useful resource for scholars and students in the social sciences (particularly psychology, anthropology, evolutionary biology and the political sciences), as well as a general readership interested in the social sciences.

Book The Order of Minims in Seventeenth Century France

Download or read book The Order of Minims in Seventeenth Century France written by P.J.S. Whitmore and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thinking of the text from the Dies frae (S. Matthew, XXV, 40). It is also probable that this other Saint Francis, partly out of admiration for his illustrious compatriot of Assisi and partly from a compelling urge to be superlative in all things, chose the title in opposition to the Franciscans, the Fratres Minori, l who had previously adopted this style taken from Saint Matthew, XXIII, 8. The title "Minim" was confirmed in these words" ... eosque Eremitos Ordinis Minimorum Fratrum Eremitarum F. Francesci de Paula in posterum nuncupari," taken from the Papal Bull, Meritis religiosae vitae, of 26 February, 1493. The earliest reference to the Order in France is in a fragment preserved in the Bibliotheque de l'Arsenal called, La regle et vie de Frere Franfois, pauvre et humble hermite de Paule, laquelle donne a tous ses 2 freres voulant entrer et vivre en son ordre. The dating of this manuscript should be accepted with considerable reserve; it bears a clearly legible "1474," although it seems most unlikely that any reference to an Order occurred before the Bull of 1493 or that any Rule appeared in French before the Founder's visit to Louis XI in 1483. 3 The fame of Francis and his reputation as a "guerisseur" had reached the French court where Louis XI was sick and dying; the King summoned him to the chateau of Le Plessis-Ies-Tours, but it required the intervention of the Pope to make the hermit undertake the journey
