Book Les anciens r pertoires de plain chant

Download or read book Les anciens r pertoires de plain chant written by Michel Huglo and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-07-14 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The differences between Old-Roman, Ambrosian, Aquileian, Gallican, and Hispanic chant, and their interconnections with each other and the Gregorian chant occupied Michel Huglo in his early career, although he returned to these questions in the 1980s and 1990s. The present volume, the second in the set of four to be published in the Variorum series, brings all this work together. Huglo's 1954 article, the first to describe the sources for Old Roman chant, recognized as distinct from Gregorian chant, is of primary significance for the historiography of Western plainchant, because it opened the debate on the relationship between Old Roman and Gregorian chant. The final section presents articles on the Latin version of the Akathistos hymn and on Byzantine chants translated into Latin that became part of the Western plainchant repertory.

Download or read book Les diff rends territoriaux devant le juge international written by Géraldine Giraudeau and published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers. This book was released on 2012-12-03 with total page 557 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arbitral and judicial decisions dealing with territorial land and maritime disputes bear the mark of compromising. They draw boundaries situated between the respective pretentions of the parties and ensure an equitable share of spaces and resources. This phenomenon of compromising symptomatically appears in the jurisprudence dealing with territorial disputes, because of their specific nature, and the geostrategic, economic and emotional factors at stake. It is also due to the remarkable flexibility of applicable norms and principles, which provides a vast power of appreciation to the judge. This study enhances how the content of the decisions is used in order to reach a balanced solution and demonstrates that the international judge focuses on peacekeeping considerations.

Book Lucian of Samosata Vivus Et Redivivus

Download or read book Lucian of Samosata Vivus Et Redivivus written by C. R. Ligota and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in this volume bring together, in a revised and updated form, papers presented at a colloquium held at the Warburg Institute in December 1995. As the title suggests, Lucian is considered both in his contemporary environment and in his Nachleben, and the overall purpose is to show the freshness and resilience of the presence in European culture of an author whose well-aimed satirical wit has, from his time to ours, led to defensive attempts at repression and expulsion from the cultural canon. As Kurt Tucholsky put it, nothing was sacred to Lucian, which makes him a 'friend, cousin, brother, comrade at arms'.

Download or read book Byzantine Art written by Robin Cormack and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-03-10 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The opulence of Byzantine art, with its extravagant use of gold and silver, is well known. Highly skilled artists created powerful representations reflecting and promoting this society and its values in icons, illuminated manuscripts, and mosaics and wallpaintings placed in domed churches and public buildings. This complete introduction to the whole period and range of Byzantine art combines immense breadth with interesting historical detail. Robin Cormack overturns the myth that Byzantine art remained constant from the inauguration of Constantinople, its artistic centre, in the year 330 until the fall of the city to the Ottomans in 1453. He shows how the many political and religious upheavals of this period produced a wide range of styles and developments in art. This updated, colour edition includes new discoveries, a revised bibliography, and, in a new epilogue, a rethinking of Byzantine Art for the present day.

Book Modern Architectural Theory

Download or read book Modern Architectural Theory written by Harry Francis Mallgrave and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-07-13 with total page 584 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern Architectural Theory is the first book to provide a comprehensive survey of architectural theory, primarily in Europe and the United States, during three centuries of development. In this synthetic overview, Harry Mallgrave examines architectural discourse within its social and political context. He explores the philosophical and conceptual evolution of its ideas, discusses the relation of theory to the practice of building, and, most importantly, considers the words of the architects themselves, as they contentiously shaped Western architecture. He also examines the compelling currents of French rationalist and British empiricist thought, radical reformation of the theory during the Enlightenment, the intellectual ambitions and historicist debates of the nineteenth century, and the distinctive varieties of modern theory in the twentieth century up to the profound social upheaval of the 1960s. Modern Architectural Theory challenges many assumptions about architectural modernism and uncovers many new dimensions of the debates about modernism.

Download or read book The Four Modes of Seeing written by ElizabethCarson Pastan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Borrowing its title from Madeline Harrison Caviness's influential work on the modes of seeing articulated by the twelfth-century cleric Richard of Saint Victor, this interdisciplinary collection brings together the work of thirty scholars from England, France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, and the United States. Each author has contributed an original article that engages with ideas formulated in Caviness's wide-ranging scholarship. The historiographic introduction discusses themes in Caviness's publications and their importance for art historical and medieval studies today. The book's thematic matrix groups together essays concerned with: The Material Object, Documentary Reconstruction, Post-Disciplinary Approaches, Multiple Readings, Gender and Reception, Performativity, Text and Image, Collecting and Consumption, and Politics and Ideology. The contributors include curators, art historians, historians, and literary scholars. Their subjects range from medieval stained glass to the nineteenth-century Gothic Revival, the Sachsenspiegel, and Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ. Many foreground issues of gender, reception, and textuality, which have permeated Caviness's scholarship. Some also present approaches to sites that have been the subject of important studies by Caviness, including Canterbury, Chartres, Reims, Saint-Denis, Sens, and Troyes. The volume offers a broad range of methodological approaches to key topics in the study of medieval imagery and thus highlights the vitality of the field today.
