Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Revolution may be over, but for a band of courageous aristocrats, the fight is only just beginning. This group call themselves "The Companions of Jehu". They lead secret lives as highwaymen, using the money they steal to fund the royalist underground movement. They’re led by Roland, a hero with a mysterious past, whose fate becomes intertwined with Napoleon’s right-hand man. It’s a romp that demonstrates Alexandre Dumas’ unrivalled flair for historical fiction. "The Companions of Jehu" is the first book in "The Saint-Hermine Trilogy", followed by "The Whites and the Blues". Dumas never finished the third part, "The Last Cavalier". Long thought lost, an incomplete version was discovered and finally published in 2005. Alexandre Dumas (1802 - 1870) was a hugely popular 19th Century French writer. Born of mixed French and Haitian heritage, Dumas first rose to prominence in Paris as a playwright, but later gained international fame with his historical fiction. Often co-authored with other writers, these stories wove together swashbuckling adventure, romance, and real events from France’s past. Among the best known are "The Three Musketeers", and its sequels "Twenty Years After", and "Le Vicomte de Bragelonne: Ten Years Later". Set across four decades, this trilogy follows the rise of the dashing D’Artagnan—from hot-headed soldier to trusted captain under Louis XIV. Dumas’ other novels include "The Count of Monte Cristo" and "The Black Tulip". His works have been adapted into more than 200 movies, including The Man in the Iron Mask starring Leonardo DiCaprio.

Download or read book The Last Cavalier written by Alexandre Dumas and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2008-10-07 with total page 844 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Selected as a Top Ten Book of the Year by The Washington Post: the newly discovered last novel by the author of The Three Musketeers. Rousing, big, spirited, its action sweeping across oceans and continents, its hero gloriously indomitable, the last novel of Alexandre Dumas—lost for 125 years in the archives of the National Library in Paris—completes the oeuvre that Dumas imagined at the outset of his literary career. Indeed, the story of France from the Renaissance to the nineteenth century, as Dumas vibrantly retold it in his numerous enormously popular novels, has long been absent one vital, richly historical era: the Age of Napoleon. But no longer. Now, dynamically, in a tale of family honor and undying vengeance, of high adventure and heroic derring-do, The Last Cavalier fills that gap.

Download or read book The Revolution in Provincial France written by Alan I. Forrest and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a provincial view of the French Revolution and assesses the experience of revolution across a broad swathe of southwestern France, in an area which increasingly looked to Bordeaux as its capital city. Here the Revolution was not simply a pale reflection of events in Paris. Local conflicts and personal rivalries are vital to our understanding of the shape of events in the region, as are contrasting traditions of religious affiliation, peasant radicalism, and obedience to the state. The book examines the Revolution within a thematic framework, and discusses such aspects as the growth of a local political culture, the incidence of rural insurrection, religious responses to the Revolution, the chequered appeal of federalism, and the uneven experience of Terror and political repression.
