Book excerpt: Cornelius von Baerle, a respectable tulip-grower, lives only to cultivate the elusive black tulip and win a magnificent prize for its creation. But after his powerful godfather is assassinated, the unwitting Cornelius becomes caught up in deadly political intrigue and is falsely accused of high treason by a bitter rival. Condemned to life imprisonment, his only comfort is Rosa, the jailer's beautiful daughter, and together they concoct a plan to grow the black tulip in secret. Dumas' last major historical novel is a tale of romantic love, jealousy and obsession, interweaving historical events surrounding the brutal murders of two Dutch statesman in 1672 with the phenomenon of tulipomania that gripped seventeenth-century Holland.

Book Les Oeuvres Choisies de George Sand The Selected Works of George Sand

This book was released on with total page 19633 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Children and Propaganda

Download or read book Children and Propaganda written by Judith K. Proud and published by Intellect Books. This book was released on 1995 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the propagandists of Vichy France, children were both a target for indoctrination and a potent symbol of the innocent golden age of the French nation which the Revolution nationale was seeking to recover. This volume demonstrates how the everyday literature of youth was subverted to incorporate and extol the dominant ideologies of Petain and his supporters, and indeed to promote the more overtly anti-semitic and aggressive doctrines of Nazi sympathisers in Paris. The book shows how the narrative structures and content of children's fairy stories were accorded a privileged position in the propaganda of Vichy France in the expression and very conception of the Marechal's interpretation of the recent past and his vision of the future.

Download or read book William Kentridge written by Judith B. Hecker and published by The Museum of Modern Art. This book was released on 2010 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This visually compelling publication highlights The Museum of Modern Art's unparalleled collection of prints and books byWilliam Kentridge - nearly fifty works spanning the past three decades. The book also features a succession of artistic interventions made by Kentridge especially for the occasion. Kentridge's practice brings together drawing, film animation, books, sculpture and performance. Too little known is the extent to which the artist applies his astonishing draftsmanship to the techniques of printmaking, including etching, screenprinting, lithography and linoleum cut. In fact printmaking has always been essential to his work, from his first forays into visual art in the 1970s to his recent large-scale operas. Kentridge's love of the printed image extends to an embrace of books. He often draws and prints on unbound pages from encyclopaedias, ledgers and the like, the readymade support adding nuance and complexity to his work. He has extended these practices in William Kentridge: Trace, using translucent pages interspersed throughout the book to respond to his prints reproduced between them in a visual dialogue between the past and the present. The book also includes an essay, an annotated checklist, a chronology and the text of a lecture by Kentridge on printmaking, illuminating its relevance to his broader practice. The publication coincides with the Museum's presentation of the touring exhibition William Kentridge: Five Themes. MoMA's presentation will be unique in its addition to the numerous collection works, including most of the prints reproduced in this volume.

Book Homer and the Politics of Authority in Renaissance France

Download or read book Homer and the Politics of Authority in Renaissance France written by Marc Bizer and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2011-09 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At a time when the French monarchy traced its origins back to ancient Troy, Homeric epic was fated to play a significant political role. Homer came to Renaissance France packaged with an ancient interpretive tradition that made him an authority on all matters but also distinctly separate from Virgil and the Aeneid, rival Italy's foundational myth. Thus, once French humanists learned to read Homer in Greek, they quickly began putting him in the service of their king in order to teach him prudence and amplify his authority. Homer and the Politics of Authority in Renaissance France provides a stimulating perspective on how Homeric authority went from being used by humanists in the role of royal counselors to being exploited by both monarchical and anti-monarchical forces in the service of ideologies, most especially in the Wars of Religion (1562-1598). In turn, French writers of the period transitioned from being monarchical advisors to stirring crowds as actors on the larger political stage. In this study, Marc Bizer not only analyzes a number of works by key authors and humanists-including Michel de Montaigne, Joachim du Bellay, Guillaume Bude, and Jean Dorat, among others- but also examines their poetry, art, pamphlets, and plays. Although there have been several studies of the Homeric legacy in western literature and even in early modern French literature, none has analyzed the political role that Homer played in sixteenth-century France for this circle of important writers. The captivating results of this approach to the post-classical usage of Homer will appeal not only to historians and literary scholars, but also to political scientists, classicists, and art historians.
