And, of course, someone who knows her real identity is chasing after her. Uncover what everyone is hiding by joining Lenore as she... -Crosses paths with a mysterious crime lord bearing a magical oath and a stark warning, -Travels to exotic lands and finds even more danger than the city holds, -And faces off against a death-obsessed cult. Can Lenore find the courage to forge her own path, or will the world of lies she's built come crashing down? Out of the Shadows, Into the Fire, and Across the Ice are the first three books in the captivating Broken Gears young adult steampunk fantasy series. Fans of the Finishing School series by Gail Carriger and Garth Nix's Old World universe will delight as this Victorian-era-esque world unfolds before them. A multi-layered steampunk fantasy tale of colorful characters, lost magic and technology, and subterfuge that promises to entrance. If you like smart heroines, forgotten magic, and rich Victorian settings, then you'll love Lenore's intrigue-and-adventure storyline. "Out of the Shadows features great prose, a gripping plot, and characters that will remain with readers long after they are done reading the story." —Reader's Favorite Editorial Review: "Dana Fraedrich has a vast eye for details and a flawless knack with complex relationships. This world is primarily steampunk, but traces of fantasy and paranormal are in the background, staying in the shadows as these characters are forced to hide certain aspects of their lives. Lenore is often judged for her status, age, and for being a woman, but she doesn't let the world define her. She uses it to create a mask to hide behind, but this doesn't take away from her brazen, opinionated, and spunky personality. Into the Fire is a riveting adventure that will hook you from page one, with a strong-willed heroine, complex characters, romance, and complicated relationships." Book Rebel Genius

Download or read book Rebel Genius written by Tara Abraham and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2016-10-21 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The life and work of a scientist who spent his career crossing disciplinary boundaries—from experimental neurology to psychiatry to cybernetics to engineering. Warren S. McCulloch (1898–1969) adopted many identities in his scientific life—among them philosopher, poet, neurologist, neurophysiologist, neuropsychiatrist, collaborator, theorist, cybernetician, mentor, engineer. He was, writes Tara Abraham in this account of McCulloch's life and work, “an intellectual showman,” and performed this part throughout his career. While McCulloch claimed a common thread in his work was the problem of mind and its relationship to the brain, there was much more to him than that. In Rebel Genius, Abraham uses McCulloch's life as a window on a past scientific age, showing the complex transformations that took place in American brain and mind science in the twentieth century—particularly those surrounding the cybernetics movement. Abraham describes McCulloch's early work in neuropsychiatry, and his emerging identity as a neurophysiologist. She explores his transformative years at the Illinois Neuropsychiatric Institute and his work with Walter Pitts—often seen as the first iteration of “artificial intelligence” but here described as stemming from the new tradition of mathematical treatments of biological problems. Abraham argues that McCulloch's dual identities as neuropsychiatrist and cybernetician are inseparable. He used the authority he gained in traditional disciplinary roles as a basis for posing big questions about the brain and mind as a cybernetician. When McCulloch moved to the Research Laboratory of Electronics at MIT, new practices for studying the brain, grounded in mathematics, philosophy, and theoretical modeling, expanded the relevance and ramifications of his work. McCulloch's transdisciplinary legacies anticipated today's multidisciplinary field of cognitive science.

Download or read book The Trauma Therapies written by John S. Marzillier and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2014 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is well recognized that those who go through a major trauma can go on to experience psychological problems. Many seek psychological help and there is a now a range of psychotherapies specifically for those who have been through trauma. In this authoritative book John Marzillier describes and reviews the various forms of trauma therapy, examining what the therapies consist of, their research basis, their similarities and differences, and what they tell us about trauma and its effects. Designed specifically for therapists, and engagingly written, the book ranges from established therapies such as prolonged exposure, EMDR and imaginal reliving to newer developments such as mindfulness meditation, compassionate-focused therapy and energy psychology techniques. Aware that therapy is more than a collection of techniques, Marzillier discusses the nature of psychological trauma, the therapeutic relationship and what psychotherapy can offer. The domination of a quasi-medical model, notably in terms of PTSD, and of evidence-based psychotherapy has led to a misleadingly simplistic notion that effective trauma therapies are those based exposure. This book does much to dispel this notion. For all psychotherapists and counsellors, this is a valuable book describing the many and varied trauma therapies. It shows how therapists of all persuasions can benefit from further understanding of how best to help those who have been through a major trauma.
