Book Weapons of the Civil War Cavalryman

Download or read book Weapons of the Civil War Cavalryman written by John Walter and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-09-17 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the American Civil War, the mounted soldiers fighting on both sides of the conflict carried a wide array of weapons, from sabers and lances to carbines, revolvers, and other firearms. Though some sections of the cavalry placed their trust in the sabre, the advent of viable breechloading carbines -- especially repeaters such as the Spencer -- was to transform warfare within little more than a decade of General Lee's final surrender at Appomattox. However, output struggled to keep up with unprecedented demands on manufacturing technology and distribution in areas where communication was difficult and in states whose primary aim was to equip their own men rather than contribute to the arming of Federal or Confederate regiments. In addition, the almost unparalleled losses of men and equipment ensured that almost any firearm, effectual or not, was pressed into service. Consequently, the sheer variety of weaponry carried reflected the mounted soldiers' various roles in different theatres of operation, but also the availability -- or otherwise -- of weapons, notably on the Confederate side. Fully illustrated, this study assesses the effectiveness of the many different weapons arming the Civil War cavalryman and analyses the strengths and weaknesses of the decisions made after 1865 concerning the armament of the US cavalry.

Book Percussion Pistols and Revolvers

Download or read book Percussion Pistols and Revolvers written by Mike Cumpston and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2005-07 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early transition from the long-lived flintlock system, handgun development closely paralleled that of the long arms. With the advent of the revolving pistols, however; came patents that created monopolies in revolver production and the through-bored cylinder necessary for self-contained metallic cartridges. The caplock revolvers took on a separate evolution and remained state of the art long after the widespread appearance of cartridge firing rifles and shotguns. They rode in the holsters of of explorers and adventurers across the world and granted safe conduct in the back-alleys of the Industrial West right up until the last quarter of the 19th Century. Handguns possess a mystique distinctly different from that of other firearms. They are tools of personal empowerment-chosen by their owners to provide independence and freedom of movement. In the ambitious, optimistic early years of western industrial civilization they were the emblem of liberty and equality and the bane of repressive governments and social movements. Largely because of the traditions that emerged in the time of the caplock pistols and revolvers, they remain so in the early years of the 21st Century.

  • Pages : 410 pages

Download or read book Pistols written by Jeff Kinard and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2004-11-23 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of the pistol helped bring the age of the armored knight to an end, provided the elite with a status symbol of dangerous glamour, and inspired both artisans and industrialists to reach new heights of invention. Pistols follows the evolution of personal sidearms in Europe, the United States, and Asia from medieval-era "hand cannons" with their clunky ignition systems, to the revolutionary Colt revolvers of the 19th century, to the modern semiautomatic weapons of today. Full of fascinating insights and details, this work shows how pistols brought about the decline of knights in armor, and ultimately replaced the sword on the battlefield. The book also explores the pistol's astonishing "democratization" as it moved from being a luxury item of the nobility, to standard issue for soldiers, to a mass-produced commodity and source of intensive corporate competition. Along the way, readers meet the many colorful characters (often eccentric geniuses) who devoted themselves to pistol development.

Book Cubans in the Confederacy

  • Author : Phillip Thomas Tucker
  • Publisher : McFarland
  • Release : 2002-05-10
  • ISBN : 9780786409761

Download or read book Cubans in the Confederacy written by Phillip Thomas Tucker and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2002-05-10 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The role of Cubans in the American Civil War is seldom appreciated. This work is the first to provide a close look at the often distinguished services they performed. Although Cubans are recorded in the rosters of both Union and Confederate forces, Cuban ties with the Confederacy were particularly strong, partly because Cuban patriots fighting for liberation from Spain tended to identify with the Southern cause as a revolutionary struggle. This work will focus on the biographies of three Cubans who served the Confederate army in the War Between the States. Darryl E. Brock offers a detailed portrait of Jose Agustin Quintero, who served as the South's most effective diplomat. Michel Wendell Stevens writes on Ambrosio Jose Gonzales, who rose to the rank of colonel and served some of the Confederacy's best-known generals. Finally, Richard Hall provides an intimate sketch of Loreta Janeta Velazquez, a soldier and spy for the Confederacy who infiltrated (as a double agent) the operations of Northern spymaster Lafayette C. Baker.

Download or read book Arm of the Bandit written by Johnny D. Boggs and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2002-11-05 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From a Spur Award–winning author of the Five Star Western Series comes a thrilling tale of James clan. Outlaws Frank and Jesse James eluded capture for 16 years and became folk heroes. In 1882, after Jesse was killed by Bob, Frank surrendered and faced trial for murder. How could Missouri convict a man so popular that the governor almost needed an appointment to visit him in jail? William Wallace had already imprisoned one member of the untouchable James Gang. Now his case rested on the word of a scoundrel and defied those who would kill to protect Frank James. The defense would paint the Shakespeare-quoting robber as an honorable family man and victim of mistaken identity, endlessly persecuted by the hated railroads. Inside an opera house, the circus like trial would decide if James senselessly murdered a young stonemason during the 1881 Winston train robbery. Perhaps the larger question was if Missouri was ruled by the arm of the law—or the arm of the bandit.

Book Confederate Odyssey

  • Author : Gordon L. Jones
  • Publisher : University of Georgia Press
  • Release : 2014-11-15
  • ISBN : 0820346853
  • Pages : 450 pages

Download or read book Confederate Odyssey written by Gordon L. Jones and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2014-11-15 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout his life, Atlanta resident George W. Wray Jr. (1936–2004) built a collection of more than six hundred of the rarest Confederate artifacts including not just firearms and edged weapons but also flags, uniforms, and accoutrements. Today, Wray’s collection forms an integral part of the Atlanta History Center’s holdings of some eleven thousand Civil War artifacts. Confederate Odyssey tells the story of the Civil War through the Wray Collection. Analyzing the collection as material evidence, Gordon L. Jones demonstrates how a slave-based economy on the cusp of industrialization attempted to fight an industrial war. The broad range of the collection includes many rare or one-of-a-kind objects, such as a patent model and early inventions by gun maker George W. Morse, the bloodstained coat of a seventeen-year-old South Carolina soldier, battle flags made of cloth imported from England, and arms made in Georgia, the heart of the Confederacy’s burgeoning military-industrial complex. As Civil War history, Confederate Odyssey benefits from the study of material remains as it bridges the domains of professional scholars and amateur collectors such as Wray. The book tells of the stories, significance, and context of these artifacts to general readers and Civil War buffs alike. The Wray Collection is more than a gathering of relics; it is a tale of historical truths revealed in small details.

Some of the topics he covers include: What are the five basic questions you must ask yourself when selecting any handgun, rifle, or shotgun for the apocalypse? How can you squeeze surprisingly useful, life-saving service from older or low-value firearms? What vital support gear must you have when you are forced to become your own gun shop? Which types of ammunition will not only serve your survival needs, but also be available in quantity when ordinary sources run dry? What roles can multi-caliber guns, backup guns, and alternative weapons to conventional firearms play in your survival plans? What practical modifications can you make to your guns to make them more suitable for post-apocalypse survival? Given how critical weapons will become in an age when you may have to hunt for meat or defend yourself against numerous post-apocalyptic threats, the more you must force yourself to consider all the pertinent factors now . . . while you still can. Because when the world starts to crumble, you won't have time to select firearms—that's when you lock and load!
