This book was released on 2016-10-25 with total page 692 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Leith and Its Antiquities From the Earliest Times to the Close of the Nineteenth Century, Vol. 1: With Numerous Illustrations, Biographical Sketches and Portraits of the Members of Parliament, Provosts, Distinguished Ministers, &C. &C; Also, an Appendix of Charters, Deeds, and Documents, Relating to the Burgh Having had the honour of acting as solicitor to the Provost, Magistrates, and Council of Leith for a period of over thirty years, it has necessarily fallen to my lot to investigate the ancient history of Leith, and to examine in connection therewith various ancient records, charters, and other documents bearing on this subject. Some results of these investigations were published from time to time in the newspapers, and repeated requests have been made that these articles should be collected, amplified, and arranged with the View of being published in book form. For a long time this did not seem either desirable or practicable, until the scheme of the neighbouring burgh of Edinburgh to absorb the ancient town of Leith was propounded, when, at the urgent solicitation of many friends, the compilation of the present work was begun. In the preparation of these Historical Notes recourse has been had, wherever practicable, to original documents and the most authentic sources. The authorities consulted are in most cases referred to, so that readers may have the opportunity of verifying for themselves, if so dis posed, the statements contained in the book. Book The Cambridge Edition of the Correspondence of Daniel Defoe

Download or read book The Cambridge Edition of the Correspondence of Daniel Defoe written by Daniel Defoe and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-09-30 with total page 1018 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive and authoritative edition of the correspondence of Daniel Defoe situates each letter in its biographical, literary, and historical contexts. A unique source for a turbulent period of British history, Defoe's correspondence spans topics including the first age of party marked by Tory and Whig rivalry, religious tensions between the Church and Dissenters, the uncertainty of the monarchical succession, the birth of Great Britain and its establishment as a global empire, and the use of the press to mould public opinion. As well as an introduction discussing Defoe's epistolary habits and the distinctive features of his letters, headnotes and annotations explain each document's occasion, beginning in 1703 with Defoe hunted by the government for sedition, and ending in 1730 with him again in hiding, fleeing creditors months before his death. The volume is illustrated with examples of Defoe's letters, offering a fresh window onto Defoe's manuscript habits.
