Book excerpt: In this new work, Linda España-Maram analyzes the politics of popular culture in the lives of Filipino laborers in Los Angeles's Little Manila, from the 1920s to the 1940s. The Filipinos' participation in leisure activities, including the thrills of Chinatown's gambling dens, boxing matches, and the sensual pleasures of dancing with white women in taxi dance halls sent legislators, reformers, and police forces scurrying to contain public displays of Filipino virility. But as España-Maram argues, Filipino workers, by flaunting "improper" behavior, established niches of autonomy where they could defy racist attitudes and shape an immigrant identity based on youth, ethnicity, and notions of heterosexual masculinity within the confines of a working class. España-Maram takes this history one step further by examining the relationships among Filipinos and other Angelenos of color, including the Chinese, Mexican Americans, and African Americans. Drawing on oral histories and previously untapped archival records, España-Maram provides an innovative and engaging perspective on Filipino immigrant experiences.

Book excerpt: Filipino immigrants' lived experiences of leisure, identity, and un/underemployment remain understudied. Since recent immigrants are more likely than others to be un/underemployed, experiences of identity are relevant to this population. Identities negotiated throughout un/underemployment may be reconstructed through leisure. This hermeneutic phenomenological study (rooted in social constructivism) aimed to understand Filipino immigrants' lived experiences of leisure and its roles in identity in times of un/underemployment. Seven Filipino immigrants living in Halifax, Nova Scotia were interviewed individually via Zoom and data analysis was guided by van Manen's (2016) principles for hermeneutic phenomenological thematic analysis. Findings demonstrate how participants had intact identities amidst un/underemployment and that leisure reinforced their identities through the development of different aspects of their identities. This study contributes to our theoretical understanding of leisure's role in immigrants' identities, can help inform service and practice within leisure and immigration, and provides insights about the methodological implications of researcher reflexivity.

The volume is said to be designed to meet the needs of Asian Americans by providing a compilation of materials in readily accessible form. Three major sections (Identity, History, and Community) encompass 61 contributions. The bulk of the Identity section deals with Asian American stereotypes and the changing relationships of Asians to them. The central section deals with the history of Asian Americans dating from the emigration period to present times. The Community section of the reader focuses upon three interrelated aspects of the Asian American communities: perspectives on community concept and community organization, analysis of community problems, and documentation of the Asian American movement. This volume is held to be focused on the attitudes, problems, and movements of Asian American youth. It is suggested that this focus be interpreted in light of the long struggle for justice and equality by generations of Asian Americans and in light of current Third World movements. Two questions believed not to have been adequately covered are the relationship of any ethnically based struggle to others, such as other ethnic groups or economic class-oriented ones, and that of the problem of maintaining a cultural heritage.
